My 89 V6 Firebird Vs Honda Civic Vs Dodge Neon Vs V6 Dodge Spirit Vs Chevy Cavalier
I have a 1989 Pontiac Firebird, 2.8L V6, auto tranny, 116 000 miles, all stock...
First the Honda Civic, it was a 93ish model I think (hatchback), we were at the light, I was sitting behind him since their was a car in the other lane. As soon the light goes green, we both hit it. He was SO FAST, I couldn't believe it, when I was at about 60MPH, he was surely at 100+MPH! His car exterior is all modified, I never tought this one would have the engine to go with the look... So, I got my a$$ handed to me for the first time tonight.
Second race we were 3 to race. I was next to an all "modded" Dodge Neon (Seems to be an RT model, but with all the exterior mods he had, I'm not sure) with a manual tranny. We floor it, we are even for a while, had to slow down because my car wouldn't shift in 3rd so he pass me bacause of that!
And what do I see when I was trying to make it shift in 3rd, another Honda Civic with all kind of stuff, he was going so fast, he wasn't even behind us at the light, he passed the Neon too. Later, my car finally shift into 3rd (I stopped floored it and it shifted), I passed the Neon too but the Civic was so far I just let off.
I think the next race was against a Dodge Spirit with a V6. Don't know these models much, I know it was a Dodge, you know, the 88ish white models with V6 writen on the front fenders. Well, he handed me my a$$ too! We were even at the begining, and at 30MPH+ he would pass me. So, 3rd lost tonight
Last race, I finally won... But not by much! It was against a Chevrolet Cavalier 95+, I had him on the launch and in speed too.
So all is not lost but well, pretty bad night for my little V6 bird.
Hope some of you guys are glad to see my V6 stories, I sometime see some that want them.

Yeah, start with a V8
. Really, go spend 400 bux on a good 3.4 and slam her in there, you'll be glad you did (then spray her and go eat yourself SOME V8s).

what was I thinking? You should get the 3.4, and "slam it in there" then you could get a high wing spoiler, ground effects, and a huge coffee can to mount on your exhaust. Then after you dump thousands of dollars into your car, it will still be slow. There is no replacement for displacement!

I agree for the 3.4L swap, it would cost a lot less. Don't forget that I have a V6 car right now, so I would need to change LOT of stuff, front spring, motor mounts etc...

WTH?!
I dont see anywhere in the title him discussing what he should do to be faster... u guys jump the gun... like some of u V8s have never lost a race!... "OH man u lost maybe u should drop a V10 in there or maybe u should turbocharge it !". For a 2.8 i like to hear these stories i have a 3.1, so i know what a v6 can do but i like to hear these stories... Not some V8 guys coming around say u need a bigger engine.
Good job on the one kill!

I'm not saying that I have never lost a race, because we all have. There is always someone out there that is faster then you, thats the nature of the beast. But what I am saying is that it is very embarrasing to lose to a Dodge Sprit. I was offering advice of what to do. I can't recall any american V6's from the 80's or early 90's(except for the turbo V6's in the Buicks) Making over 200HP at the rear wheels. The V6's that went into the F Bod's were for people who wanted the look, but wanted the gas mileage(ie the 4 bangers of the early 80's) . They never were developed with the intent for street/strip use. If that was your intention, then you would drop the couple thousand extra bucks and get the 305, 0r 350. So if you want to compete in a 3rd gen, you really need to look into investing into at least a 350 block. You will never get buy with a stock V6, the power to weight will kill you.
My old v6 was reasonably fast. From one stoplight to the next I could keep up with stock 305 camaro's. Just from about 35 mph and up I got hosed. I switched to a 350 and never looked back.
WaOnFiRe -- Dotn be afraid of making the switch to a V8. Its really not all that hard. I've been working on mine for a while now, and its almost done. I dont know where you live, or how emmisions are, but if you dont have to deal with emmissions, it is really easy to switch a V8 into your car. If you dont thats cool though, cause I drove my V6 camaro for 5 years with the little 2.8 in it, and i loved it. I even thought about building up my little v6, until I really thought about it. lol.

Lol
Poeple who HAVN't gone through the V6-V8 swap are the only opinions you should value son. There is obviously more power to be had with a V8, but it gets expensive. Most V8 guys know nothing of WHY you can't just "get a V8". We have a different transmission for one thing. 700r4s are NOT cheap, either rebuilt or new. If mine could have bolted up, I would have thrown a nice 350 in it, but it's just too darn expensive fro a daily driver. Most V6 owners aren't out to run against V8s at the track, they just want somthing a little quicker (to beat Hondas?). Your average stock V6 4thgen is faster than a TPI 305 (mildly modded can STOMP 350 TPI cars). There's MANY cars u there that are much faster than most of the V8 cars here...Stock ones. If you want a V8 thirdgen, buy one with a V8 in it. If you wanna be fast, you ain't getting there in your daily driver. Just my .02

I think that when he stated that he should get a V8 he was just offering advice from one thirdgen fan to another. I dont think that he was trying to offend anyone or bash the V6, Truth is the V6 is a good engine, i am a huge fan of the 2.8 and the 3.1. But i think that we all know that when they put the V6 in the thirdgen's that they werent exactly looking at performance. And instead of dumping all kinds of money into a V6 instead you could use that money for a V8 swap. Were all friends here, theres no reason to argue.

Just to clarify
the person who started this thread never said anything about wanting to do any performance modifications
...u people are puting words in his mouth. im not tryin to argue just to state that hes not saying hows hes disappointed with what his car is running. simply writing some "adventures" he had with it.

Hondas...
I'll say this for them, They got a good aftermarket (unlike the V6
) AND they can be easy to work on (don't know why EVERY Honda "performance" enthusiast doesn't yank the head off and do some SERIOUS modification, it's an easy task and there's alot of room for improvement. I'd rather have my rear drive car anyday, nothing like cutting a corner sidways-Most Hondas can't do that!
