Anyone ever run with a 1.8t Jetta?

Reason I ask is because my dad has one. A 2001 Wolfsburg. It's a 155-ish hp turbo motor, nothing special. But this thing freaking FLIES. Must be a really light car.. Of course, he wont run me, because he's my dad, but he wont even take it to the track to see what it'll do. I looked around for quarter mile times and found nothing. Does anyone know what these things can do?

I raced a 1.8t a while ago with my Camaro RS (305 TBI, LT1 cam). I had about a car length on him up to about 70mph.

Mid 15's? Jesus.. The thing feels that fast or faster. Pulls harder than anything I remember riding in, save for my uncle's 1999 ram air Trans Am vert...

My friend has a 1.8T in his GTI and the car is very fast. It was rated to go mid to high 60s for 0-60 and in the low 15s in the 1/4. We put it on the Gtech and I ran 6.4 0-60 with me and him in it. Car hauls, but Im sure the Jetta is slower as his is rated at 190 I believe!

How does the timing belt breaking have anything to do with the quality of the motor?

When it takes out a few valves the motor certainly won't run now will it

Sorry, I'm biased. I just hate the motor. It's not fast, it's not powerful. Sure, with extensive mods it can put out power but at what cost?

i had a VR6 jetta... ran a few of them

with minor mods, the 1.8 turbos run mid to low 15s. stock is high 15s.

with the VR6 jetta, i drove from the east coast to dallas to vegas, and with my fatass, 5 peoples luggage, in dead stock trim, ran 15.2s

not too shabby... i mean, its not a drag car by anymeans....... but for a comfy, nice to drive 4door, its not bad. faster then 95% of the cars in the TBI forum.

I've ridden in a 1.8T jetta. Good car. It is a great engine, any OHC engine is gonna break timing belts if you don't replace them. They definately feel quick and torquey, good for a daily with a little pep. However, it isn't a mind-blowing performance car, comparing one to an LS1 is kinda ridiculous. Should be about as fast as a 305 TPI assuming the TPI is running like stock, which few are at this point.

I'll never forget what a ***** said when we were at a restaurant with a few friends. One of the bozo's brought this guy along and we all drive sub 13 second cars and out of the blue this guy starts talking about a Jetta and how fast they are. We all looked at each other and just started laughing at this guy. I don't mean to talk them down, but this guy was definatley ignorant of what and who was around him. I could understand if he actually brought up an import with some ***** like a supra, rx7, something of that sort, but he was nut hugging a jetta around mustang and camaro owners, hahaha.

And yes their slow.

The 1.8T motor isn't what i call a junk motor, it does have its problems with coil packs. Most of the import multivalve motors are interference type motors, not just the 1.8T. If the timing belt breaks in a DSM or 1.8T, you can kiss your valves goodbye. But if you keep up with regular maintenence, they are fairly troublefree besides the coil packs. Any chipped 1.8T would be comparable to a bone stock 305tpi or even some of the older stock 350's. But from the factory the 150hp version of the 1.8T was a disappointment in my book, the 180hp version was a little better.

You have gone a sub 13 second 1/4 mile? If you did I missed it and you dont have it listed in your sig (not being a dick, Id like to really know, see what that mph came out to in the 1/4 with traction)!

Also I have hung out with a lot of VW owners, and most dont care much about track times. They never look at a Mustang or Fbody and pick on it, they make fun of ricers, and gawk at the other nice German cars for the most part!

EVERY interface motor ever made will take out vavles if the timing belt breaks, my question still stands.

You're supposed to change them every 60,000.

Well I havent ridden in many fast cars. Didnt mean to compare it to an LS1 though. And the coil packs have already been changed on this thing. Not to mention, the torque comes in at about 1300 RPM.

I just don't like it. I've ridden in a few...they don't impress me much at all. Everyone ohh's and ahhh's over them...I'm still trying to find what makes they desirable.

$500 and it can make about 200whp. I dyno'd my fathers GTI a few months back and i bought him a ECM upgrade. Since the wastegate on the 1.8T is electronically controlled, by chipping it you can change the boost, etc. 200whp is more than enough to run mid 14's. I consider that a decent upgrade for the money.

not when compared to other factory turbo cars. think of what that same $500 can get you for a Grand National

I am right in the middle of dropping in a new ZZ4 into my '88 IROC convertible, I can't wait to compare the new engine against my daily driver, a 2003 Turbo Beetle.
I needed a car that would be cheap on gas and fun to drive; from day one this engine has amazed me.
It amazed me to the point that the first week I had it I decided it had to go in for suspension upgrades.
I will be getting it chipped this spring by Revo, they claim dynos of 207 hp.
At present this thing on a twisty road will easily hang with the big boys, and then proceed to embarass many of them.
If any of you have a chance to try out this engine, do so.
I'm sure you will be impressed.

VR6 > 1.8T

if you're going to get a VW, get the engine that doesnt suck.. lol

sure you could mod the 1.8 for around 200hp... you know, risk your warrenty because its modded and such...

or just get the 200hp VR6..... and if you dont mind modding the car, turbo kits for the VR6 start around 2k, and that jumps you way past the little 1.8T

*shrug*

Watch yourself here. The VR6 is the better motor IF:

1) You are at sea level

2) You NEVER plan to mod it.

Otherwise I have to give the green light to the 1.8T due to it's potential with the turbo. Otherwise, the VR6 is just like any other N/A import motor, difficult and expensive to make fast, and this one happens to be a real bitch to work on I hear. On a side note though, the VR6 is every older VW enthusiasts wet dream motor swap for those old Jettas and GTi.

This guy was a ***** driving a riced out honda civic, a buddy invited him along. I have no beef with the jetta's just the guy made himself look like an ***.

Yes you are correct, I did not officially go in the 12's at a 1/4. I did however race TexasLT1 on the street after the cam swap and was neck and neck with him with 7 cylinders. He runs 12.7 in the 1/4.

Spun a rod ( https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=289589 ) in that motor and just dropped my block off at the machinist. I got a 383 on the way and bought some ported heads (https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=289311) , they flow:

.100 72/54
.200 138/110
.300 195/144
.400 245/187
.500 262/202
.600 262/208

If your not familiar with stock casting numbers (which I was using) they are about

intake212cfm @ .550 lift and exhaust 145 @ .550 lift.

One hell of a improvement.

Went with forged pistons and rods and a compression ratio of 11.5:1. I'll be in the 11 sec club soon enough .

Nice, you put a 305 in the car? Alot better than stock RS.

Dont forget about stock powerband, too. And I like the transmission/differential combo. My Firebird runs out of first gear too fast.. Er, the one that is a standard, that is.

Oh, and the Wolfsburd edition ones only came with the 1.8t. And that is what my dad wanted. At least it isnt like my friend's 99 Jetta. It's got a n/a 4 banger that is just.. wrong.

1) isnt everyone at sea level?

2) why not? you already have a headstart on a modded 1.8T (at sea level) and they respond well to turbos.. the VR6 PCM can "see" boost right from the factory...

every motor is hard to work on and modify....... until you own one.
then its easy because you learn the "specialized knowledge" for that motor.....
