anyone ever get beat by a diesel truck??
I was at the track the other night just watching, and a turbo-deisel ford truck was running 13.60's consistant. i watched him smoke a 300ZX, about 3 stangs and even a few LT1 f-bodys...
This was all in a stock appearing "farm truck".. I have seen a few articles in some rags about boosting these things up and running low 12's. There was a stock looking Chevy diesel that ran 10's in hot rod i think.
I would have my azz handed to me by one of these things on the street even if i sprayed!! Has anyone ever gotten beat by one of these sleepers??

I spotted one in Waipahu once, duals on the back, lifted, lots of crome, but the turbocharger whine was the dead giveaway.

Yep, these are damn fast trucks.
One of these big diesel nuts is Maddog. He won several awards already and is going for more. I actually witnessed Maddog's record run for a diesel truck in his category (6000+ lbs). He runs a 1997 F350 4-door CrewCab LongBed diesel truck in low 11's. His record run was 11.28sec. Maybe he already broke it again.
These trucks have highly modified diesel engines with dual turbo's, chips, upgraded fuel system, free flowing exhausts etc, etc, etc.
For example, Maddog doesn not launch on green, he waits until he hits 40lbs of boost and then he's gone in a black cloud of soot.
I wish I could find the video of his 11.28sec run. It's out there somewhere.

There was a guy out at Cali Speedway a couple of weeks ago with a Chevy Suburban 4x4 sitting about a mile off the ground. Ran high 12s.
My brother in law has a Ford F550 Crew Cab duelie with the bigass turbo diesel in it. Took it up to Banks Engineering and hed them work their magic on it - dyno'd at something crazy like 485HP and 765lb-ft. I keep telling him he needs to bring it to the track but my sister (his wife) won't let him!

i dont know of any v10 turbo diesels in pick ups.....yeah there are not any. a 485whp deisel is not alot of power. the really powerful ones make 620whp and 1700wtq. these are street trucks down here in texas, and most of them run from a 10.5 to a 13.30(some are very heavy, like 13,000lbs) mostly 40psi boost is for the launch, but they make up to 120psi.

As long as these behemoths got the tell-tale turbo whine when they are modded, i will have some warning on what im up against. I can't even imagine seeing an 11 sec. 4 door crew cab duallie. That is crazy!!! Its like launching a space shuttle.

a friend in the local fbody club got a turbo diesel a few months ago... dead stock you can hear the turbo.
now he has a bulleydog and a few other upgrades, runs this HUGE truck into the mid/low 12s, and it still has a very similar turbo sound.
you cant go off of sound... besides, if you do, by the time you hear it, they're gone in a cloud of black smoke.

If you use a VV turbo, you can open it all the way and have no boost until cca 2500 rpm (with 3300rpm redline). That way, you can fool others into thinking you don't have a turbocharger. But close it half way and you can build up pounds off idle easily.
Anyway, I promised some videos, here they are:
Maddog's famous 11.28 run
Another 11.34s run
This is a better shot from a viewer's perspective to give you a good idea on how fast the truck's actually launching.
And finally the famous video that goes under the name "Now you see him, now you don't". He's gone before you can say "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious".

Maddog's got the fastest truck in his class. I believe he's holding the world record if I'm not mistaken. I'd be curious what 4-dr 6000lb diesel truck runs faster. Can you dig up some info? Or heck ... are we talking about the same truck? Did MD break into 10's??

I don't think many kids around here can afford a $35000+ truck and still have money left over to modify it. I'd buy a C5 before that.

yea if you can find a decent turbo-diesel for 35K and mods then you got a deal, either that or its the no-option model. these things are expensive as hell if you get all the bells and wistles with it.

I know a lot of guys with heavily modified diesel trucks who love to brag about how fast they are. I tell them to take them autocrossing and then we'll talk.

Well, my co-worker autocrosses his Chey S-10, heavily modified for autocross and road course use, except it's only the base-model four-banger engine. It out-handles both my cars easy, but I'd totally ownage him in the 1/4 and on the street, as long as there's a minimum of turns. I have a heathy respet for that little truck.
I know it isn't the same thing as a lifted turbo diesel running elevens (the S-10 runs whopping NINETEENS! He checked just for giggles), but I just had to share.

The difference in the whine on a modded vs. stock turbo diesel is pretty incredible.
I've had modded ones go by me that WHINED so loud it was more like a shriek than a whine. My dad's stock 97 dodge ram doesn't really whine at all. Maybe a little bit.

True, you can tell the difference btw a stock turbo diesel and a modded turbo.
We're building a turbo controller for my friend's truck (he put a VV turbo on) and were driving around last night to test it (pushing 20psi at 1500rpm!) and then we pulled into Wendy's for a sandwich and when we got to the cashier window, I increased the pressure to the vanes on my laptop and the turbo starting whistling and the guy's like "wacha got there, that sounds awesome?" and my buddy tells him "that's a turbo" ... "aaah, so you got like a supercharger?" ...
and my buddy's like "no, it's a turbocharger ..." and started explaining how we control the turbo from my laptop to reach desired boost levels etc ... the guy was just grinning and nodding.
Meanwhile, I was just jacking with the guy by boosting 2psi at idle and stuff.
It was a good night.

It was a good night. Here's a quick video of the most impressive NON-diesel truck I've ever seen.
It's even a chevy, enjoy.

BigBabyLou: Holy crap, that's funny as hell. What kind of pickup is it?

It's a '99 F350 dually, completely stock ... except for the VV turbo.
I'm hoping to put one on my truck as well ('94 F350). The stock turbo won't push more than 22lbs at WOT. And at 1500rpm, I'm glad to have 5lbs.

EDIT: Hell, even without the turbo, 1,500 rpm might as well be where the car idles.

Stu, That was a great video to add to my collection
Deisel engines are pretty cool and easy to mod. The more fuel you add the more power you can make. Thats about all there is to it.
