well do you have a 305 or a 350
because stock as far as i know the ford 302's in those mustangs were faster than the chevy 305's but if you have a tpi 350 i wouldn't doubt that you have the upperhand

but don't quote me on it

Stock for stock you should have him. I also have a 1987 Firebird Formula 350 (since new) and I have had many stop light races with late 80's mustangs. It will be close. I usually only won by about a car length to 80 mph. The longer the race the more likely he could come back and beat you. So with your mods and if your car is in good tune, and you have a decent launch, you should win this race. If the mustang has any mods, then all bets are off.

Very important... is his a 5 speed or an AOD?

Stock vs stock id say you have him. The shorter the run obviously the better chance youll have. Thanx to the l98s ungodly torque.

I never lost a stoplight race against stock or mild 5.0s in my hometown (not that there arent insanely fast 5.0s out there)

Race him and find out! Can come down to a drivers race (or whomevers vehicle was better maintained)

Make sure he doesnt throw some more mods on it before then. These cars respond well to the small stuff. A catback isnt much, but gears and he will probably take you.

Good luck, you never know with those pesky 5.0s!

Your race to lose. I doubt the 5 spd will matter, since he probably cant drive it as good as he thinks he can. A good mustang driver in a 5 spd foxbody can edge out an stock auto l98 in a quarter.

Wait, i just read where it said you have headers, exhaust and ignition. You're going to win if he just has that exhaust.
