406 vs. lightning

Ok, so i just got a new 400 short block for my 91 rs, and my neighbor is gonna help me bore it out to a 406 and build a pretty stout street engine out of it, then he wants to me to run his 01 lightning, all stock, how fast are these? and can i take him fairly easy with a good setup?

I don't know how fast a Lightning is. But I do know how fast a 406 can be. You should be able to smoke a truck. Lightning or not.

Stock lightnings arent that fast. I think they run a little slower than L98 cars.

If you bother to put any time at all into the combo of that 406 you'll eat them for breakfast.

IIRC, stock Lightnings (of fairly recent vintage, not the 1st generation) run high 13s off the showroom floor - but the key word there is "stock". When I lived in Houston a while back, there was a pretty strong rivalry between the Houston area F-body group & HALO (Houston Area Lightning Owners) - and several of the trucks were at least competitive with the modded 4th-gens... And it doesn't take a whole lot to drop .5 sec or more off their times (smaller pulley, etc.)

You could probably compare them with Fox-body Stangs or DSMs - when you pull up alongside one, it might be stock - but then again...

the Lightning is indeed fast for a truck! but I dont think you will have trouble beating him with that 406

2001 Ford SVT Lightning
supercharged 5.4
380 HP
450 Ft/Lbs of tourqe
0/60 MPH- 5.9 sec
1/4 mile- 13.9 seconds @ 100 mph

Correct. The stock Lightnings are good for high 13s, so they just do get good running L98s. A 406 with any decent set up should be able to smoke it.

Why anyone would buy a lightning and keep it stock is beyond me though.

As a former L owner, I agree with the assessment above. The '01-'04 (factory rated at 380 hp) are good for high 13's straight out of the showroom. My '00, rated at 360 hp, ran 14 flat at 103 mph (at 3,100 feet). BTW, I weighed it too. It came in at a hefty 4900 pounds (with me in it). It was my daily driver but I replaced it with a more "civil" car. I needed a car with a back seat and trunk -- enter my "civilized" supercharged '03 Cobra!

Mine was stock when I bought it (used) and I never modded it. Why? All my hard-earned "car" money went into my IROC-Z..... Today, my '03 remains basically stock. It's a nice daily driver! Other Ford guys who try to take the time to talk to me are always blown away when I tell them my Cobra is my daily-driven, grocery-gettin', kid-haulin' "beater" , and that I'm really a Chevy guy in disguise -- that my 305 IROC-Z can run circles around it.

Well, most people could only afford to have one toy, but I can see why you would keep yours stock. And other ppl who just go for a clean ride too.

You're a lucky man to have all those fast toys though.

Honestly, I've never seen a newer blown Lightning run slower than a high 13. It doesn't take too much to get them into the 12's. The early 90's N/A Lightnings run low-mid 15's.

Lightnings are weird. I have seen stockers with the plastic on the seats go 13.3s all day, and also ran one that went 14.2. Granted they changed some over the years, but they seem to be all over the board. I would say on average I have seen high 13s or so from them. At a good track on a nice night, could go mid to lower 13s (lower 13s might need perfect conditions). 12s are nothing in them, but with his being stock and an 01 Id say higher 13s!

I would agree with everyone here. If the lightning is stock you should not have an issue.

My budy has one with a few mods and while it's fast for a truck it still runs 13's. They also don't get very good traction becuase they don't have much weight in the back. (or atleast that has been my experiance)

seen her go 13.23 and 13.25 one night, all at over 103mph. not bad for a mild truck

not bad for a truck period. Especially having the aerodynamics of a brick.

A guy here in ottawa had one. Built shortblock, stock untouched heads and cam, and a Kenne Belle, and he dyno'f 490+rwhp, and over 600 rwtq. i would have like that truck to get to the track before he sold it.

With a top speed of 149 mph! It took the SRT-10 with the Viper engine to break this record and it was only by 5 mph (154 mph).

Go here:

http://www.svt.ford.com/flash/

then click on Lightning, then Vehicle Specs. I owned mine for 1-1/2 years. Very impressed with it.

ya man, lightnings aint no joke! Dunno if this guy was stock or not but I barely bested one at the track with my bolt on 98 LS1 Camaro. I ran a 13.2 n he ran like a 13.4 or something. I thought the race was over when he launched a 1.8 60 foot to my 2.2! But I caught up n passed him near the end of the track. Gotta love the LS1!!!
