So, my annoying friend hasn't stopped letting people know he beat my RS. He loves the fact that he beat my old sports car (it was his grandparents car he used to beat me...no fair). He drives an old *** caprice with a 305, somehow he never has time to race me in that. Anyway, hes buying a jeep and i'm looking forward to trashing on it...hopefully. Its a 1994 v6 i think, 4 liter cherokee. Its auto. Im pretty sure ill be able to take it out, as far I know its stock. Ive got the common open air element and a tune but not much else. Opinions? any idea who would win?

Also...my cooler friend just got himself a pretty nice 2002 VW GTI 1.8T 5 speed. I drove it, and it really feels faster than my car to me. Now i don't have my heart set on beating him, but both me and him are curious who would take it in a race. Anyone know about that?

Stock 1.8t's are not exactly fast from the factory, but 305 tbi's are far slower from the factory.

 

He'll probably beat you. Those are high 14 second cars if I recall correctly. A tune and it's suddenly a low 14 second car. If that Jeep was a 5 speed I'd bet he could take you for about 600' as they have absolutely incredible low end, but they're an aerodynamic brick, so obviously have nothing up top. I miss my old cherokee...4.0L, 5 speed, 3.73's in the back, not much more than 3000 lbs...

 

I was really expecting to take the GTI off the line then get destroyed later on. As for the jeep, its an unmodified auto....i'm really thinking i can take that without too much of a problem, thanks for the input

 

my friend drives a wrangler with what is gonna be the same engine and trans, and i garauntee that the wrangler would be faster than the cherokee, and that thing is soo slow, wouldnt even be a challenge, if it were a manual trans, it might be a little tougher, but still nothing to worry about, as for the other car.. i wouldnt know anything about it.. but no worries with the jeep.

my 93 ford econoline van beat him with ease, it also has the 351 in it instead of the 302.. but still i beat him in a big old heavy van.

stop wasting gas running jeeps, do some mods. headers, exhaust ect.. then race some imports and win..imo

 

Well...i would mod my car endlessly, but i don't want to spend money modding a 305 tbi when i hope to eventually have a 350 tpi or an lt1, so thats outta the question. And i don't think its a waste of gas, its just having some fun regardless of winning or losing.

Well....why would i be. I have an essentially unmodded 305 tbi and from what i understand that year and model Cherokee had pretty similar power outputs to what i got. Also i think it has 3.55 gears compared to my 2.73. So....doesn't seem out of the question to me.

 

Stock 1.8t's are roughly mid 15 cars. With a chip they are around high 14, 15 flat.

If the GTI has a engine like this, you better run mid 11's or faster.

(BTW, I built this engine for a buddy of mine. I am guessing it will be in the mid 500 range.)

come on guys, its one of his friends, to just screw around its not that big of a deal, itd be another thing though if they were both taking this super serious.. if that was the case i dont think either of them would be throwing out there what they are... niether vehicles are hardcore race machines.. so i dont see what the big deal is...

 

you should check into the timing mod on here. my friend did hit to his 305tbi and it will light em up now....its something about adjusting the timing 6degrees and it really wakes up the motor

 

My neighbour has a '92 4.0 inline 6 Jeep Cherokee with 60,000 miles on it and I am sure it (as I have driven with him in the vehicle) will give pretty much any stock early '90's 305 tbi a good run.

So have fun, it seems everyone wants to make a big deal of it.

 

i own an 97 jeep cherokee. its my snow car. it has some ***** yes, is it fast NO. if u cant take it ,youre car would be a joke, and be one of the ones that give thirdgen's a bad name. i owm an bmw m3 i race imports and stock mustangs with that. and i usually win. if i cant ,i take out the t/a and scare the p.o.s. I never even considered racing my jeep. (maybe in 6" of snow against a bronco)?

wth? I guess my LG4 is better than a TBI then, I get more power than any of the ratings have said for it. And everyone under estimates my car, even everyone on here.

 

unless the jeep has a 5.9 360 like mine, you will be fine. even the 318 are slow. but my 360 pulls really nicley. but its a jeep im mean come on what are you worrying about!!!???? as for the VW i have no idea.

 

lol, wasn't really expecting this much attention from this question. I'm pretty sure its already been said that this is just to screw around and have a little bit of fun. Neither me or my friends think our cars are the best out there, id love mine to be, but i've accepted the fact that it isn't exactly a hardcore performance machine. Just because its not fast doesn't mean you cant still have fun with it right?

Either way thanks to the people that gave me some input on this, ill try to get a race going sometime soon and let everyone know what happens.
