89' Vs Stang?

I have a 1989 Camaro RS 5.0 TBI Auto and all i have done is a open element and good plugs wires and rotor and cap. I raced my friend he has a 2005 Scion TC with the 2.5 or whatever 4 cyl 5 spd and he beat me up to 60mph by like one length. on the road going over 100 he couldn't loose me then i hit my 110 limiter but anyways one of my other friends have a 1999 Mustang with the 3.8 5 spd i believe.. i know its not a 4.6 or whatever the GT is but do you think i could take him? I am planning on getting headers sometime. I have a flowmaster muffler and tailpipes. How would we match up?

Re: 89' Vs Stang?

Probably not, you're going to need some mods to hang with the Mustang. He won't just run away from you but I don't see you edging him out. Keep reading through the TBI forum and you'll get a good idea of what you'll need to be competitive with your car.

Did you really own an 04 Viper, if so it must be rough going from that to a TBI car?

Re: 89' Vs Stang?

The other day i raced a 2004 Hyndai Tiburon with the v6 and got beat, this kid passed me maybe going 20 mph faster than me on a road thats like 1/4 or half mile mile lol idk. he got me at about 1/2 way i was going about 80-85 mph at the time and he claims he beat me in 5th gear. it took him awhile to catch me but i mean why would you risk loosing a race just to try to win in 5th gear? sounds like bs to me.what do you think?

Re: 89' Vs Stang?

your car is somewhere around high 15s in the quarter. id say a 99'+ V6 stang is around low - high 15s depending on trans and driver

Maybe the O2 is different. I dunno. I can say that the O2 i drove is nowhere near the camaro i drive now, and its pretty basic. tranny is the ony difference.

Could just be a SOTP thing. I know an Fbody will feel a lot faster than cars that will run with them. There are some cars (LS1s are an example) that don't really feel insanely fast yet are. The power comes on through a wide powerband, a thirdgen it is short and quick where the power hits, and feels fast on the street.

Either that or the thirdgen is faster than the 02 was, I just witnessed what my friend ran in his, and thats all I can share. (to note he just went 13.0 @ 105 in his stock Mach 1)

i test drove an 03' for my girlfriend and was actually quite impressed. My buddy has a 94 v6 stang convert. that I could smoke with my 92 camaro 3.1 all day long, but in his defense he picked up a lot of chicks for it being a convertable. I'm a camaro guy, but I'd definatly have to agree with this quote. Ohh and if you were wondering my girl went with an 06 Saturn Ion

V6 rustangs are decently quick but are by no means, fast. I'd say that after test driving one, it would be a mid to low 15's car. Nothing to worry about really. If you have an iron duke, you'll get smoked but anything else and with very little modding, you'll beat it.

If you wanted to make your ride get up and go on the cheap, swap out those granny gears for something like 373's or 411's...and get a posi for off the line.

Put a 350 in your car before you bother with other stuff.

Or you could do it the right way and race legally at a track. Build your car for the 1/4 mile.

Ummmm last time I looked this was the street racing section...if you go one section up there is a legal drag racing section to post in.

I just get sick of all these posts. Who builds a car to race up to 100 mph? Some immature kid who thinks his car is hot ****.

Umm... building a car that will do well in the 1/4, should also make it run well on the street last I checked.

I did. My car sees a lot more street time than track time. Most of my street races I shut the car down around 100MPH for 2 reasons: I'm uncomfortable with triple digit speeds on most streets, and the fact most of my races I'm so far ahead by 100 there is no need to keep going.

And LOTS of guys build 1/8 mile race cars that trap around 100
