87 iroc vs 96 caprice

a co-worker of mine has a 96 caprice with LT1, iron heads, and flowmaster exhaust. could he beat my stock 87 iroc 5.0 TPI? if not, could he even beat my 92 5.0 TBI? he thinks his car is like super quick, but i told him its a slug.

Re: 87 iroc vs 96 caprice

LT1 Bbodies were low 15 - high 14sec cars stock. your LB9 IROC (im assuming its an auto...dont remember you stating the trans in your post) is mid - low 15s. dont even bother with the L03, thats a high 15 sec car at best

FWIW, if your IROC is a manual, its capable of high 14s stock

Re: 87 iroc vs 96 caprice

The longer the race, the more likely you'll lose. My '94 Buick Roadmaster Estate Wagon ran a 15.19@92 MPH completely stock with just over 120,000 miles. Granted it has the optional towing package with 2.93 gears but it's considerably heavier than a regular Caprice. Oh, one other thing, they have a speed limiter at roughly 106 MPH. You should win on the highway, lol.

Re: 87 iroc vs 96 caprice

all i know about his motor, is it has iron heads, and its a v-8. and the only v8's i ever heard of in those cars were the LT1, and that the LT1's in the caprices had iron heads. it dosnt seem like a very fast car, ive ridden in it. he punched it on the way to lunch and i wasnt impressed.

rocluvr0013 is correct, the LT1 was only optional in the Caprices while all Roadmasters got the iron head LT1. He may only have the baby LT1.

Re: 87 iroc vs 96 caprice

I drive around a 96' Caprice with the baby LT1 and its not too shabby. Sure an LT1 caprice will rape it but its not to bad. Takeoff it'll put you in the seat! ...... I love caprices though. they ride so nice! but nothing beats having the raw power of my Camaro I think the IROC has the LT1 by a little bit though. Caprices are about 1000 lbs heavier too. Keep that in mind... I think the race will be close....

Re: 87 iroc vs 96 caprice

lol, took the RS today, we went from mqueen to arizona ave. i was in the RS which is stock, and he was in his caprice. soon as the light turned green i hit it *my car being an RS i never have trouble with traction...theres just not enuff power lol* and he did the same, but his wheels spun, even if only for a moment. i stayed ahead up till about 80-90 mph, then we were pretty neck and neck, and then we werre at the other light. he woulda killed me if he hadnt spun his itty bitty tires first, but i was pleased. i would kill him in my iroc, he dosnt wanna race anymore. his flowmasters sound nice tho

While were on the subject. What exactly is the "baby" lt1 called? Its something like 283 cubes right? And whats the bore/stroke? How would one recognize a baby lt1 vs a 5.7 L version?

Re: 87 iroc vs 96 caprice

The baby LT1 was the L99, 4.3 v8. Externally identical the the 5.7 LT1 as far I know. From wikipedia....

A 4.3 L version of the LT1, designated the L99, was introduced in 1994 for the Chevrolet Caprice. It was externally identical to the LT1, but the bore was reduced to 3.736" and the stroke to 3.00" (similar to the late sixties Chevrolet 302 used in the first-generation Camaro Z28s). The pistons used in the L99 were the same as the ones used in the Vortec 5000 with the use of 5.94" connecting rods.

Like the LT1, it features sequential fuel injection, reverse cooling, and an optical crank position sensor. Output is 200 hp (150 kW) and 245 lb·ft (332 N·m).

Due to its smaller displacement, it provides better fuel economy over the 5.7L LT1.

So put in A 305/350 crank and rods and you'd have a 305 LT1, lol.

Thats exactly right, looks identical to the LT1. idk how to identify them though... our caprice is a 4.3 but i'm not sure how to show that it really is if someone asked.

LT1 has 5.7 stamped on the block
L99 has 4.3 stamped on the block

Casting numbers are different for the block and heads also.

you could also check the underhood emissions sticker. thatll tell you what engine is in it

one more place to look is the 8th digit of the VIN

So does the L99 have the exact same LT1 style intake manifold ? To my knowledge all of the Interceptor Caprices were the 5.7 LT1's.

Re: 87 iroc vs 96 caprice

The 9C1 caprice could be ordered with the 4.3 but are all basically LT1's, if he lost to a stock L03 it very well could be a 4.3 unless his car is messed up, my caprice is a mid to low 14 sec car and on the highway from a roll, goes like a raped ape, but would never touch my my old 350

So Im guessing that the intakes are exactly the same on the LT1 and L99, specs wise ?

This explains why so many 9C1's dont seem to have as much power as I would've expected them to have, I've driven a few. I guess they were all L99's.

Re: 87 iroc vs 96 caprice

Even LT1 Caprice's aren't that quick. They'll feel sluggish also. With only 260hp and 4000lbs, its not too hard to see that. Plus its a different feeling altogether driving one. Smoothness can be very deceiving also. It can run down the 1/4 in the same time as a F-Body and you'd think you were running a couple seconds slower.

Re: 87 iroc vs 96 caprice

I remember a post a long time ago, about a race back in the day against an Impala SS vs a 5spd 305 TPI IROC-Z and that they were dead even until the iroc hit 4th gear and he started to pull away. This would sound logical because both are mid 14sec cars out of the box.

Quite a few police forces got the L99 because it offered a fairly big savings from GM as compared to getting the LT1.

I raced my friend in his 1995 Dodge Ram with my Caprice 4.3. Heres the vid....

Keep in mind that my old L03 ran perfectly even up to 80Mph with the Ram..... (Nose to Nose even)

Keep in mind that my old L03 ran perfectly even up to 80Mph with the Ram..... (Nose to Nose even)
My 1994 2500 would rip both of them EASILY though.

How do i doubt that? maybe 20 more hp than the ram in the vid and AT LEAST 500 LBS heavier... explain to me how you would "rip" me?

A 1/2 ton, short box, regular cab 5.9L would go pretty good. But really in the end it's a truck, not a Camaro.

they don't die right after they get off the line.... maybe in his it was around 3-4th gear.... but also my dad has a 94' Dakota that has the 318 in a 4wd drivetrain and that pulls pretty damn hard all the way to 80 then started to die.... (also keep in mind its lighter but still heavy) I raced *****s and wasted them up to 110.

And also what iroc22 said they are stil trucks.... usually have power but no aerodynamics to help out, plus they usually weigh ALOT!
