89 RS vs 02 SS

I'm told the '02 SS LS1 ONLY has a cam up grade and some tuning.
I do not know what cam is in the car nor do I know which transmission or gears he is running.

If it helps, he clams 25+ mpg.
Also he does not have A/C, not sure if its removed or just inop.
I'm told he can drive the wheels of it but have never seen the car or driver.

I'm sure there is more to it than is being told but this is ALL I know

My car,
89 RS, full body and interior. 3.73 rear, T5 trans, worn out 26x 10.5 DR's
383 ci, HSR w/52 mm tb & 30lb injectors, 4" MAF with a modified air lid, World Products Sportsman heads 62(or 64) cc chambers with angle plugs and 2.02 valves, Balanced Eagle bottom end with flat top pistons, Comp Cams XFI 280/288 roller with .578 lift(if I remember correctly), shorty headers into a single 3". The tune is really close thanks to alittle help from Craig Moates.
I can drive it but I do have a problem with tire spin out of the hole.

The run will be a 1/4 mile from a dig.

"IF" the SS is what I have been told can I at least give him a good run?

Sounds close to my setup. I'd like to see how this turns out.

Re: 89 RS vs 02 SS

if its just a standard bolt on with mild cam in the ls1 it could be close. i think he will edge you out..... my opinion though.

still definetly want the results.

Re: 89 RS vs 02 SS

i think it will be really close, you would probably have him in an 1/8 mile race for sure....LS1 motors pull really hard on the top end, thats all i would be worried about in the quarter mile. i hate those cars too so the best of luck to you, youre 383 should be more than enough power to give him a good run

Re: 89 RS vs 02 SS

This race DID NOT happen. I decided not to go but at midnight last night I got a text from one of the guys out there saying the he was running his mouth about me not being there, I replied with "be there in 30 minutes". When I got there he came up to me and we talked a minute. I told him I wanted to watch a couple arm drops to get a feel for it and then we would go. About 10 minutes later he came up and said his friend wanted to run me. His friend had a bad *** Vette. I missed second, game over. I never miss second, third sure but not second. Anyway, when I got back I told him I was ready whenever he was. About 15 minutes later I hear him tell everyone that he is headed home and he get in his car and heads out.
I'm sure he may have ran before I got out there but he sure didn't run it after I showed up. I hate that, I think it would have been a great race.

I must say, they have a nice spot to run. The road is about 2 miles long with no houses and a long straight out in the middle of nowhere that doesn't see any traffic during the day so at night its only the racers. They have reflective paint at the start and finish with a spotter at both ends of the road. As safe as it get for street racing.

Re: 89 RS vs 02 SS

I highly doubt you have have taken him, "cam only" means bolt ons, cam and a stall if its an auto. My buddy ran a 11.8@115mph cam only with a 230/236 thunder racing cam

Re: 89 RS vs 02 SS

lol the cars could be making about the same power, and probably weigh about the same. its funny how everyone assumes the LS1 is going to win just because its an LS1.
putting a cam in a car doesnt mean you have all the boltons and a converter, either.

Re: 89 RS vs 02 SS

I have never ran on a 1/4 mile track but my best in an 1/8th is 7.4. I forget the mph.

He is running a T-56 and hooks hard out of the hole, but has yet to say anything to or about me after I showed up that night.

I actually went back out there the following weekend and ran the Vette again. I did a soft launch and was able to stay beside him in first, pulled ahead in second then I screwed up and missed third. time I got in gear he was about a half car on me and thats where I stayed till we crossed the line.

Lower control arms and relocation brackets are here and will be in before I run again. Maybe then I can hook and with any luck NOT miss a gear.

I like how the one person who highly doubts I can take him has one of those feared LS1 cars. But hey, maybe he is right. Personally, I think the cars are close and it could be a drivers race.

When the suspension parts are on and I have new DR's I will remind him that he called me out and we still need to settle it. I don't mind getting beat, it just needs to be done on the asphalt and not by mouth.

I'll update when I have more info, may be a month or so because I'll be out of town the next 3 weekends.

Re: 89 RS vs 02 SS

it could also be a case of the guy saying the car has a cam, when it really only has exhaust or tune work done.

A guy in the local club has a 99 TA that might make it into the 11's soon with just bolt ons, and weight reduction

Re: 89 RS vs 02 SS

2 run's, 2 missed shifts. I think I'd learn to shift better, get a shifter, or fix any possible problem with the tranny. Other wise........why bother running if you know odds are your gonna miss a shift, any shift. A loss is a loss excuses or not. Personally I'd rather not have an excuse. Win or lose I'd rather no mistakes on either side. And even tho I know LS1 cars arent unbeatable, Try one, you'll like it!

I'm not trying to imply you cant drive a straight, I dont know just saying you should take care of the problem be it you, or the tranny. A good short throw shifter could make all the differance

Re: 89 RS vs 02 SS

The problem with the shifting is me. Before the engine went out I NEVER EVER missed a gear. In fact, the first time I had it on a track I had to prove it was a 5-speed because of the way I could shift. Then the car set for just over 3 years with no engine and the only gears I shifted was in a big truck or the pickup I had at the time. Now that the car is back running I'm having to learn how to drive it again and do fine until it really counts then I screw it up by getting in too big of a hurry. When the car hooks and I do my part correctly that thing really runs great.

Its hard to believe how sloppy I got in just a few years.
