'84 Z28 H.O. vs. 1st gen MR2

So i have this buddy at work talking all kinds of smack about his MR2. We're going to be setting up a cash race soon. My Z28 is an '84 with the l69, t5, and 3.73 gears. it's pretty much stock aside from a K&N filter and having about 50 pounds taken off of it. Now the MR2 is an unknown year (80's) and has a rebuilt 4age, a "legit" carbon fiber spoiler, and a "racing clutch". His engine is pushing about 112 hp, but his car is 2400 lbs. so should i be worried at all? the race is scheduled for next friday.

he has less horsepower but also less weight. your engine is no powerhouse and you have more weight. you'll take it off the line for sure. if you can hold that then you'd be home free. good luck to ya

That's pretty much what i figured. he wants to try to pick on the 305. he won't race my 350.

Wouldn't doubt it, op has a L69 stick, assuming its in good shape should walk it, I think people are underestimating his car.

My car has a brand new clutch and flywheel, and i've had quite a few months of seat time with this camaro. I actually found out the mr2 owner has wrecked 3 cars in the past year due to being a horrible driver. By next Saturday i'll have a video of the race.

Could be those old 112hp MR2s only run a 16.5 to 17.2 ish 1/4 and do 0-60 in about 9. I think that puts them slightly ahead of the 2.8 and 3.8 third gens. Even the sced ones usually only get high 15s while the later model turbos usually can do mid to low 14s. Where the really tend to kick butt is the twisties. But don't underestimate a later gen MR2 with a 1mz sc swap that are quite fast.
