the 2.2 has 115 and the car is a dog. The Z-24 is a quick car. They have 150 hp but are light and extreemly agile. My roomate has one ('98) with a few mods (motor mounts, lowered, K&N) still mostly stock but he can give me a run for my money anyday. If you have a TBI like me be careful who you race. Oh but on a good note, the 2001 cavaliers have a new tranny (old design kept braking) and they are not as fast!! I have driven both and my roomates 98 just flies and the 2001 was slow as hell. 5spd makes those cars a second qquicker to 60 to.

There was a Z24 cavalier at the races last weekend that was rice-ified with fart tips and all, but it took a new GT Mustang. Everyone was laughing...

I know it sounds strange, but the 97-up Cavalier Z24 and the Pontiac Sunfire GT's w/ the 2.4L 5 speeds are pretty quick little cars!! I know of two that run at the test and tune sessions a lot, usually grudge racing each other. The guy I know pretty well has a 5 speed Sunfire GT and it went 15.60's with only a muffler, which would probably kill a stock or very mildy modded 305 TBI. Since then he's added a custom cold air set-up, a fiberglass hood, some Nittos, and a little 75 or 100HP shot of NO2, and he's running 14.30's, So beleive it or not those little cars aren't that slow, even in stock form.

I have yet to see a mildly hopped up Z24 to beat me. Their tourque curve is flatter than my friend's girlfriend's chest (j/k). Remember you can talk horsepower all you want, but tourque is what these v8s are known for, off the line, I got them all, i don't know about the full 1/4 mile tough.

Finaly, some1 who knows what they are talking about! thank you ethan71 for bringing up the point that our V8's have the torque that all the other cars don't. HP doesn't mean S%!t its the torque that makes all the difference.

When I was in Bristol TN(1400+ altitude). last year for the GMHTP EFI Shootout I saw a stock (except muffler)Z24 with a 100 or 125 shot of N2O run 14.20's. Not too shabby.

As mentioned above, our V8s have the advantage of having A LOT more torque, but you have to remember that torque is only good for about the first 300ft or so, after that it's all about HORSEPOWER.

theformula, I really don't have a good answer to your question, besides $$$.
I should be in the 13's as soon as I get back to the track, I have a 2500 stall torque converter and shift kit getting installed in a couple weeks. That 14.4 is my best from last year.
Next year I'll be doing heads, cam, and intake to get me into the 12's, and then I'll shoot it full of nitrous until I get 11's or blow up, which ever comes first.
After that, who know what I'll do.
As far as my Paxton goes, it's doing great!! I had it rebuilt about 9000 miles ago, but I think the accident I was in (rear ended a New Yorker) caused it to malfunction.

those cavalier's might be quick, but they just don't "feel" like it anymore. The 2.8 and 3.1 cavaliers are 10 times more fun to drive just because they give the feeling of speed. kinda like how my camaro feels so much faster than my girlfriend's bone stock '94 Grand Prix SE w/ 3.1, when her car is actually faster than mine.

my girlfriend has an '88 Z-24 Convertible. I was following her back home day along a deserted road. The road was about a mile long. She decided to floor it, so I booked it after her. That little car has some guts to it! I kept with it without much trouble, but I could see the Cavalier giving some unsuspecting ricers a run for their money. It isn't my knd of car, but it would make a pretty damn good sleeper.

I can add to this. I just bought a 2001 Cavalier. Base is nothing compared to the Z24. The 2.4L is alot quicker than the 2.2. I heard they have come out with turbocharger kits for the 2.4L's as well, enough for 13's. The base Cavalier's are good for nothing more than a commuter car, though. Ricers are good for paperweights. To get anything out of a base 2.2, you have to wind it up to around 6 grand. It's still comparable to a weak 305, if you have a stick. For speed, I'll stick with my '86 IROC.

actually dhirocz from what I have seen, the quad turbo kits usually put them in the mid 14 range. Just my opinion.

I have a friend who has a 98 Z24 and she ran a 15.5 at the track. That is compared to the 89 RS which was tested in a magazine (not sure which one) at 16.1 seconds. So when you decide to line up, I wouldn't take it lightly, or you may get beat.

guys these cars are dogs. I took my 97 formula into the shop and they gave me a 2 door caviler. I almost died in that POS. I pulled out of the dealership and there was a simi truck coming down the road about a 1/2 mile away so I pulled out and the car rolled into the street(not excelerated but rolled!!) when I looked into the rear view mirror the truck was comming up hard so I started to give it a through push with the accelatior pedal and the truck still came closer. I tried droping it in 1st and the car still did nothing. Needless to say the trucker was pi**ed of and nearly ran over me and the tiny car. I will never set my butt in one of those cars again.

MY best friend had a 99' Cavalier z24 5spd and he took it to the track in 2000 and went low to mid 15's all day long bone stock. We used to go cruising in his car when I had mine apart for some project. He killed many a ***** in that thing, and it was fun. but when I got my car back together, i raced him at a stop light, blew his *** out of the water off the line and he never caught up. After that I couldnt find him again for half the night LOL! But anyway the speed limiter on those things is exactly 108mph (we hit it many times)
John
P.S. He was rear-end by another cavalier driver at the j-body gathering in ohio last summer. Now he has an Extreme Blazer. At least he didnt buy a ***** or a mustang. heh.

It's s sad to hear(read) that these little cars can blow away a V8, in some cases. Even if it's a TBI and the car is heavier.

I dont know, but to the guy who said a Neon with Nitrous beat a Viper, the Neon mustve been running about a 200-300 hp shot, and in the next 10,000 miles the Viper will still be running and the Neon's bottom end will have exploded all over the freeway.
