305 build up?

I am going to look at an 86 TA tomorrow with a 305 4bbl H.O. I know 305's arent as good as 350's and whatnot, but he only wants $2200 for this car. If I put, say $1200 bucks in the engine, could I run mid 14's? I cant really put a 350 in it now cuz it has to be a daily driver and its my only transportation. I want this car to hang with stock and mild 5.0 fox bodies... can it be done?

you can actually get it low to mid 14's for around that (maybe a bit more)... Car Craft did a build up that cost about $1500 that got 325hp out of a 305... They got Vortec heads, an Xtreme Energy Cam, Edelbrock Super Victor Intake, and a Holley 750 carb. I've got the files saved on my computer, so if nobody can find the actual article online I'll upload them later.

for $1200 you can get a 305 well intothe 14's. just be smart about parts choices, 305's don't tend to like the super huge, max air flow stuff that 350's can take advantage of. what you can build is a nice little, smooth running, sleeper motor with tons of low end torque to rip people out of the hole with.
get a base line and let us know what it runs. i am sure enough people here have built 305's to give you the advice to get it runnign right.
the big key to being fast on teh cheap is knowing how much of the work you are willing to do your self.if you use a shop your money won't go half as far.

Chevyss I would look for a Camaro with a 350 it's alot easier and less expensive to achieve higher hp than with a 305. With a 350 your options are wide open a with 305 you are limited.

you can grab a decent camaro w/ a 350 for around 2400- and a 91 or 92 for up to 5400 hell I just got my 89 RS for 1800 but it does have the 305 TBI on the upside of that its the 5 speed manual. I am however looking into putting a 350 into it. maybe Ill even get a 350 TBI from the American engine exchange here in salt lake and have them do some custom stuff to it for me.

Yeah Im really looking for a 350 TPI Fbody but I cant find any around here except a 91 Trans Am with 134 K miles, a bunch of dents on the hood(it wont pop) and a dent in the front fender, and the guy still wants 5 grand for it!

For $1200 you can buy a Goodwrench 350 rated at 250bhp. Just something else to consider.

135,000 miles on my little 305.

It does 14.04 @ 100.8 MPH, and I put $800 into the engine, $600 into the exhaust (Edelbrock TES ) and $150 into a Turbine Technologies torque converter.

It can be done, but you will need to do a lot of stuff yourself, like change your own torque converter, and port your own heads. For a couple hundred more, buy some aftermarket heads like the WP SR/305 castings.

Whooo ha! ha! Have fun!
