Posi traction and the such...
Ok, this question has been plaguing me for a while, I first of all am wondering how you can tell that your car has posi-traction. And if anybody knows if it was offered in my car (refer to sig)? Finally, the question I want answered most... When I got my car, the right rear tire was completely bald, and the rest had about 20-30% left on them... is this a sure fire way to determine that I don't have posi-traction? My friends keep telling me I'm wrong, but that is the main driving wheel correct?

From what you said i say no posi. Want to make sure i hear that a posi (with the car jacked up) spin one of the wheels. If the other wheel spins opposite its a open rear end, if they go the same direction its a posi. Again just rumors hopefully someone with more exp. will back this up.
Jason is correct! You can also figure out gear ratio (relativly close) by marking drive shaft and tires with chalk at one point on the shat and housing, tire and quarter pannel. However many times the drive shat rotates for 1 tire revolution is you gear ratio.

there is also the fun way to do it
just take the car and do a massive burn out and if you have two tire marks then you have a chance ;-)

i think mine is messed up....cuz it will do posi burnouts sometimes and sometimes it wont(majority of the time it doesnt).......and also i heard that if you put your car in D and go 70 mph you can find out your rear gear ratio
Ex.
4100RPM=4.10
3730RPM=3.73
3432RPM=3.42.......etc......
and it worked for me...cuz mine was barely above 3500RPM..aka 3.73
and i heard that if you have a manual put it in either 3rd or 4th and try it.....i forget which one.....but hope that helps ya

the one that only drives one wheel is a open diff.
an open diff gives the power to the tire with the least traction, were a LSD will give the power to the wheel with the most traction.
most clutch based posi units if I remember right can do a 50/50 split meaning two wheel burnouts and good for a drag launch ( I think the camaros only use a clutch LSD) were a gear based one like a torsen can not do a perfect 50/50 but is better suited for road racing.
and open diff can possibly do a 2 wheel burnout but they are not common and if you are mostly doing a one wheel you prolly have a open diff.
another way I heard to tell what kind of diff you have is do a 180 degree cookie. if you leave 2 weels or the outside wheel leaves a tire mark then posi. if it is the inside wheel then an open diff. this is prolly not 100% but it is a good way to have fun while learning about your car
if I am wrong guys please let me know

I spun the tire a while ago... it is an open diff by that measure... So, let me get this straight, the rear tire being totally bald was a good indicator, but it got that way because it started to go bald first and thus had less traction and became the tire that ended up getting more power and it went into a vicious cycle?

I think my diff is going bad, most of the time I smoke both tires, but one night both started to smoke then one tire stopped while I was starting to do a donut.
I've got 140K+ Miles on the car and I am not sure if the rearend has been serviced.
I am going to do that when I get the car back together after I get the TPI swap running.

If you jack up the back and turn your wheel and the other wheel goes the other way it does not mean you don't have a posi. You still might have a posi unit and it is worn out. Anyway with the power you got you dont need a posi. Just put some drag radials on the back and you wont be able to spin them on one side.
