how fast?
I have heard a lot of stuff about ricers. how fast can they actually go. now you get a 300zx with twin turbos it will be fast, but haw fast have you actually seen these cars go. No BS please.
I just started college at MTU and I am very suprised at the ratios of jap crap to american iron. pretty sad to see this in the motor country.

Well i hate to say it but the people who spend a few thousand dollars on a eclipse, or honda or another import, they can make quite impressive HP. I read that they can get the suckers up to 600 hp fully hooked up. I have always liked muscle cars better though and refuse to jump on the bandwagon and buy an import.

well it depends on what you do. They mostly all have 4 bangers or 6 cylinders so they cant do that much unless you drop the turbo and nos in it. This is what most of then do. But of course they add the giant tailpipe and ground effects. American cars have alot more potential in my opinion due to the engine compart space and the bigger engines we make. You can drop in a nice crate motor in a firebird, but i dont think so in a crx or civic. It doesnt really work i believe. But this is excleding all the high end jap cars. The twin-turbo supra(the stock version can only get to like 500 hp), the skyline, nsx. But those are more like exotic cars in my opinion.
Here are a few timeslips from some DSM owners:

I'm sure there are sites that post timeslips for other models, but I don't know them all.

No, but you can drop a number of domestic or japanese honda engines into a crx or a civic with little-no modifications, depending on how fast you want to go. Dropping an Integra or Prelude motor into a chassis that weighs around 2100 lbs soaking wet will make a BIG improvement...plus there's still room for a turbo, supercharger, or nitrous if you're still feeling frisky.
In my part of the country, "jumping on the bandwagon" means buying a Mustang or a Camaro. There aren't that many imports around...and those that ARE are more show than go. Some of them can seriously back it up, though. I have personally seen a Civic run 8.3's in the 1/8th (he's run 12.7 in the 1/4, but I didn't SEE that). I've gone street-racing in a 12 second DSM in Tennessee and spanked all OVER an obviously modified 5.0 Mustang and a stockish looking (except for wheels?) 300hp LT1 Corvette...sorry, didn't SEE the 12 second run, but I was shotgun for the races...and the other cars WERE racing. There are other examples, but the some of them are merely hearsay from reliable sources. I won't submit those to the ladies and gentlemen of the jury today.

First of all, to clear this little detail up... the CRX is a model of the civic, and not a different car... just a body style.
The typical import will make 17-18 second quarter miles and 9-10 sec 0-60's. higher end 4 bangers will get you down to 14-15 second quarter miles and like any car it is possible to drop below 10 sec in the quarter mile, but you have to spend buttloads of money... it really depends how much money you got to burn... I would say you have to spend about twice as much in mods to match performance...
The only exception would be Mazda's rotary driven cars (Rx2, Rx3, Rx4 and Rx7's) which came with .9L-1.3L engines making up to 135 N/A and 255 Turboed... racing rotary engines (which fit in 2nd and 3rd gen Rx7's) with 2.0L displacement make about 350Hp N/A and the 2.6L made ~500 Hp N/A. It is not uncommon to see Rx7's pulling 9.5-10's all day long.
A good built Rotary racing engine will go for about $10,000-$20,000 (like a well built blown V8).
