2001 civic vtec vs. stock 88 GTA
Brand new 2001 civic si vtec w/ intake and a few other mods, stick too.
I think he will give a good race against my 88 GTA.
It's an auto, bone stock 350, runs great.
Any thoughts, power/times for these things?

i would say that civic is running between 14.6 and 14.9
but i think if your car is running good you should still win
what gears do you have? 3.23's or 3.42's
like mss said, if you know how to launch you'll win.
------------------
1989 307 RS, soon to be 350.
1995 Red T-Top Camaro, 3.73 gear, F.I.P.K. K&N,Flomaster Cat-Back, Gutted Cat...Very soon, Centerforce clutch and 100 shot of Nitrous
1998 Ford Ranger 3.0 Cold air intake and flowmaster exhaust.

I think it's 3.23, how can I be sure and what diff. does it make?
I think my launch style is pretty good, i'm quick on the trigger and I roll into the gas so I don't sit and spin on my brand new ZR Yokohamas'. I'll need all I can get, I hear those imports, let alone sticks are quick off the line as well.

There is was no "Si" model in 2001. They will probably be available again as a 2002 or 2003, but they quit producing them in 2000.
Assuming that your friend's car is actually a '99 or '00 Civic Si, he'll probably run a low-high 15, totally dependent upon his driving skills, or lack thereof. He may or may not be a decent race, if this is the case. I have seen a very, very few Si's with minor mods bust out a high 14, but these are very rare occurances.
Assuming that your friend's car is actually a 2001 Civic with VTEC, there's little chance for him without nitrous. The top VTEC engine in 2001 Civics only made around 127 hp (vs. 160, for the earlier Si's)...even with basic mods, you should beat him like a drum.

The easiest way to figure your rear gear ratio is if you have an auto stay in 3rd gear and do 70 mph. What ever your tach is reading that is the gears you have. For example if you are doing 3230 rpms then you have 3:23 and so on. The lower the gear ration (numerically higher) the faster your acceleration will be in most cases to a point and it will decrease your top speed.

Thanks for the tips.
As for the Si I misquoted, it's a `00.
He said it was a brand new one so i assumed it was `01.
So he's got about 160hp + any mods he's done?
I can't remember exactly what, better intake and exhaust parts.

You should be able to win. I raced my friend in his 01' civic 5-speed, and he ran a 17.4. I crushed him w/ a 14.7 in my basically stock 91' 5.7L Z while having my rear discs rubbing and enigne troubles.I'm willing to bet a v-tec w/ some mods would probably run high to mid 15's.
If I were to put money on this..I'd put my money on you

Keep in mind that the 160 horses won't hit until 5500 RPMS or so, and he has no low-end torque.

You'll win. Stock Si's are bout late 15's. My buddy has a moderatly modded one (in and out, cam gears, pullies, stage something clutch and the signiture rice body kit) and still gets taken by SH preludes. He is a good driver too.
Another thing, even though those VTEC motors dont get their peak power till a certain RPM, then can still launch relativly hard if they know how to ride the clutch through. And also, bottom end power only works for you in the first 2 seconds of the race. For the rest of the race, you're running in the upper RPMS. So unless you shift at 3 grand when you race, bottom end power is not all that to brag about.

Also keep in mind that the gears are so tightly spaced in these cars that this really isn't as much of a disadvantage as you might think.
