454 SS vs Lightning

In 93, which was faster in the 1/4? I thought the SS was like a tenth quicker but it didn't win any awards that year because it's brakes sucked (front heavy).
Can somebody provide proof in links or scanned infomation that proves either way which 93 truck is faster in the 1/4.

I heard that the SS's are slow stock, but once u do some stuff to them they are really fast. I believe the lightnings are faster

I think there was a thread somewhere around here about the 454SS trucks before. I've also heard that they aren't really all that fast, just really torquey, cause its TBI 454 that kinda is just a big version of the L03. Its got potential though thats for sure, and talk about a killer ride to tow your race car with!

I don't have any stock times, but I did see a many mid 90s SS 454 take on the lightings. the SS walked all over them. most ran 16s so I'm pretty sure they where stock. and the drivers seems to do an ok job.

was it possible to get a manual with those trucks?
In a couple of years when I am out of college, I am thinking on getting one for my car collection.

No stick . It's a torque monster anyways, a stick tranny wouldn't hold up against the big block. In 90 the SS truck had a 3 speed auto, in 91-93 they had a 4 speed. I have no idea why some had a 3 speed but try and avoid them .

I'll take credit for that quote cause that was me that said that.
The Lightning ran 0-60 in 7.3 seconds and so did the 454SS, and they both ran the same 1/4 mile times 15.8. They're pretty equal. I know that the 454SS truck is heavier than the Lightning though. I know the Lightnings came with 351s but I don't whether its a Clevlend or Windsor. Does anyone know?

oh and the 454SS had the TH400 tranny for 90-92 and in 93 up it was the 4L80-E which was the TH400 only electronic and w/ overdrive. These trucks also came with 3.73 rear ends. Nice.

I once owned a Lightning. They came with a 351W with GT40 Heads and a GT40 intake. Only automatic w/2200 stall and 410 posi in the rear.It ran 14's in the qtr. Both trucks stock, Lightning by one car link. The ss's were chocked down by there intake and exhaust. The Lightnings have factory headers
While the SS had manifolds.Give them true dual exhaust and get rid of the TBI sh t and
they run all over a Lightning.BUT the Lightnings were speed density.Change them to mass air and then line the trucks up again.

I never saw an ss run 14 stock. I don't know what the old ford ran but, the new ones are really fast.

the lightening will win. they were much faster. the SS sucked from the factory.

who said a stick trans couldnt hold up to the torque????? sorry dude but are you retarted??? They put stick tranys in diesel trucks that make monster torque. they offered a stick in the LS6 chevelle that made 460 hp. they offered a stick in the GSX stage 1 Buick that put out 550ft/lbs. and your gona tell me a stick cant hold up to a TBI 454???? i really get sick of peoples mentaility that stick trannys are weak. the M22 can handle anything a T400 can.

I don't know what decade you're living in but the T5 tranny that most f-body guys are used to would NOT hold up. Yes the M22 would hold up no doubt BUT the M22 is only a 4 speed and very rare. The M21 and M20 are good but don't expect them to last in stock trim against a big block with traction.
As for the comment about stick tranny being weaker than auto. It's always been that way. I have yet to hear of a stick tranny with a torque converter. The standard trans always put more stress on the drivetran. You pop the clutch fast and you'll put a lot more stress on the tranny gears than most autos. The torque converter is what makes the auto so great in drag racing and why it isn't the best thing for the autocross.

stick tranny with a TC, Liberty, Lenco

M21 was just the wide ratio version of the M22. if it was weaker, it wasnt by much. my buddy has a stock M21 that lives behind his 600hp EFI 454 in his 66 El Camino. With the right clutch and driver, they will stand up.

As for the T5. obviously its not a high performance tranny. my 4 banger jeep came with one. But at the same point in time as the SS454 came out the corvettes were getting the ZF6. That could withstand the engine in the 454 easily. Even a mildly build T56 could probably handle a slightly modded 454. Another buddy of mine has a T56 in his blown 95 formula that runs deep into the 11's on radials and high-mid 10's on slicks.

the point of all these examples is that if GM had put forth any effort, they could have easily slapped a stick behind that engine. anybody have the hp and torque numbers for that engine anyway???

The 454 SS doesn't deserve to wear the SS name if you ask me.

A few years back a friend's 454 SuperSlow just barely ecked out another friend's Toyota Corrola. I was riding in the Corrola and it was funny as hell. SuperSport my *** . TQ would have been a better moniker, for Torque Queen...

Why does GM always build a sh*tier version of the same thing Ford is doing? They take a cool idea (a big-block in the 90's) then make it a damn sled! The only thing that Gm has had an edge on was the 94-96 Impala SS and look what they did to that! We'll see how the Marauder holds up!

------------------
I WOULD RATHER PUSH A CAMARO THAN DRIVE AN IMPORT

1983Z28 350w/ edelbrock performer RPM power package , dynomax shorty headers, 700R-4 with shift kit, 750cfm carb, edelbrock 3" exhaust system, 16" IROC rims and ASCD SS hood.

future mods:
completely done over suspension, black paint with flames,
T-56 almost ready to go in, TPI swap coming up

Wifes new car:

95Z28, AT, leather, T-tops bone stock for now.

future mods:
header to tailpipe replacement and a cold air intake. Then I am just going to leave it alone
