what's it take to pull a wheelie?

My friend and i had an argument awhile back. He has a 96 Z auto with cold air, no maf screens, 52mm TB, and Hyper. programmer. He said with slicks and nitrous he could get his car to wheelie. I think he's full of ****. Just for curiosity, what would it take to get his car to wheelie, or my 89 T/A 350tpi auto? Just wondering, thanks guys.

I know of a few guys who race with my dad in a Factory Stock class who have pictures of their nearly stock 5.0 Mustangs pulling the front tires. This all depends on what you mean by wheelie. If you mean just getting the left tire in the air, than it's totally possible, but if you mean pullling them 3 feet in the air, than not with his combo. It all depends on the meaning of WHEELIE!!!

first off all your friend is full of crap , if he ran nitrous stright off the line and slicks he would blow that stock rear right out of there , especially if he hooked hard enough to do it , this is assuming he had the tourque to do it (which he does not) . its not easy , youd be looking at major mods , that includes your internals .

also, don't forget that he'd have to set up his suspension to help him get that wheelie

I've seen guys with A4 LS1's w/a nothing more than a decent converter unbolt the front swaybar, throw a set slicks on the back and pull the front wheels a couple inches off the ground. Don't see any reason to claim that your friend is full of ****.

It would take a lot of torque, but I can't say whether or not your friend is full of it.

its really not all that hard, one of my friends was telling me there was a guy that had just a mild 350, but had 4.56 gears, 90/10 drag shocks in the front, slicks on the back and sandbags in the trunk and it would hit the rear bumper on the ground on the street! really anyone can get there mild car to do a wheelie if you also do the things like that (drag shocks in front, really steep rear gear, slicks,..

Wheelies are a thing that my friends and I have argued about too. No matter what anybody says things run different from car to car. The #1 deciding factor is traction. I have seen cars with not that much power lift some. So if you can catch a hell of a lot of traction you would be surprised what cars can do

------------------
92 honda civic
w/95 gsr a hell of a lot of bolt ons and a 75hp shot
86 Trans Am (in progress) w/383 stroker
turbo 400 thats it so far shooting for 10's

I'm aware his friend's car would be an LT1, but with a decent shot of n2o I dont see where it would be down on power to an LS1? I'm talking maybe 3 - 6" at the most, not like some huge 4' wheelie or anything.

When I was up at the track last year this guy was up there w/ a 91 LX 5.0, engine had never been opened, only external bolt ons only, gears, slicks & a 2-stage NOS set-up (not sure of ratings but remember engine was totally stock). He was running mid-12's carrying the front tires about 6" or so in the air the first 60 feet! On one run he hit the 2nd stage of juice right as the front tires were setting down, he grabbed 2nd & the car bounced so hard it brought ALL FOUR TIRES OF THE GROUND! It was unreal & if I hadn't of been there to see it first hand, I wouldn't of believed it either!! My last toy was an emmissions exempt 84 Monte SS w/ a 460-horse 406, 3500 stall TH 350 & 3.73's w/ a Powertrax locker in the stock 7.5. Cars best time was 12.7's @ 112 on street tires but its last run prior to me selling it was on a set off Hoosier QuickTimes & the car hooked HARD yanking the front left a few inches off the ground (then ran a 13.8 on 6-cyl. b/c I lunched the valve train!) I could sit here all day w/ stories of cars I've seen do crazy stuff, point being, it has a lot to do w/ traction, the launch & driver, & track conditions. W/ some NOS & traction it wouldn't surprise me to see an LT1 yank a front tire or two...especially if they're skinnies up front (both cars mentioned above did which also makes it a little easier). Anyway, that's my story!

I'm with mss
I think that if an LT1 fbody hit the spray AT THE LINE, stuff would just explode. I'm not sure, but if the car was mine I wouldnt even think about trying

I'll bet with the stuff you mentioned he could do it if he put a 4.10 in the back, took the swaybar off the front, and maybe got some skinny's and drag struts up front. But thats a big change i guess. What gear is out back?

That rear would either be a 3.23 or 2.73 since its an automatic.
