How do you guys take a corner in a 5-speed?

So just to get opinions out there...Theres this corner where I live that I always drive on...and my car can take it faily easily at 45mph but when taking it I keep in 4th gear an accelerate through the corner....what do you guys think....what would you guys do??

The corner rather smooth and not to hard to handle. but woudl liek to see your guys input.

Simple. Take the corner in whatever gear allows for maximum aceleration withouht compromising traction. So if it's raining, take your 4th gear corner in 5th, or just coast through it.

I think it's more important to downshift correctly in a corner (If you need to) so as not too upset the suspension by unneccasry weight transfer cause by jerky shifting.

Also learned this one trick riding motorcycles. Keep your eyes focused on where you want to go, ie: look through the turn, and the vehicle will much likely follow through as opposed to going off the road. I find this especially helps a lot in front wheel drive cars that naturally under steer.

Re: How do you guys take a corner in a 5-speed?

Try this as quickly as you can while you approach this corner at 45mph in 4th gear:
-Press in the clutch
-Shift to neutral
-Rev the motor to at least 3.5k rpms
-Press in the clutch
-Shift into 2nd
-Turn as slowly as you can; no jerky movements especially while in the gas
-1/4 to 1/3 throttle as you enter the apex

Your downshift should slow you up enough to where you don't need to use any brakes.

Re: How do you guys take a corner in a 5-speed?

The posts before me prettied up the words but it boils to down to a rev-matched downshift.

But essentially you just want to be in "the" gear. "The" Gear is the gear that best matches the corner speed and the engines power band. Sometimes that doesn't match up and you just can't put the engine in the sweet spot. This happens on transmissions with more widely spaced gear ratios.

I suggest watching in-car videos that show the driver shifting from inside the car.

Yes. Track (or empty lot). Practice. Practice. Practice. You can only be told how to take a corner in general terms unless the advice giver can look at the corner. What's the radius? Is it constant? Camber? Up or down hill? What's the approach and exit like? The surface? etc. etc. etc.

I generally use the brakes to slow down for the corner and if my R's get low enough without letting off the break hit the clutch then give the gas a good stab and downshift followed by letting off the clutch. then when the time comes I will slowly push foot to the floo on the gas and upshift as needed.

Re: How do you guys take a corner in a 5-speed?

Brake, heel toe into whatever gear puts it in the power band, balance the throttle to keep the car on the fine line that is the limit of grip, roll onto power, exit the corner and power away. Go autocrossing and ride with some of the more experienced guys to see it first hand, then learn and polish your skills there. If you have an old empty road with good visibility to play on you can practice there even more, just be careful and do it when there's no traffic/ anything you can hit and don't get too crazy to where you'll seriously hurt yourself or end up in jail. 10/10ths belongs on the track.

Heel-toe brake+downshift immediately prior to entering the turn. Lots of practice to become proficient at heel-toe.

At least, that's what I did in my Subaru before she broke down... the Camaro still has a slushbox.
