Just got walked by a 4.0 Jeep... sad...

Pulled up to a light, he pulled up next to me and gave a look, green light I got the jump (if there is something I can do is have hella RT), about 25-30 we were even and he kept pullin real hard. had about 3-4 cars by the time 65 rolled around. This was on 37 and I've had bad luck with cops lately so I shut down.

This was with my exhaust leaks and a little spin off the line, half a tank of gas and my stereo blasting the new Kittie CD.

At the next lite another new GenY SUV of some sort pulled up next to him... they both got a great jump but the JEEP! walked the brand new SUV... the SUV was RAV4'ish, but definatly new GenY crap....

Anyway, does this sound right? I feel it should have been about even, but that I would pull once the wind started pulling on his clunky machine, but i didn't... is my exhaust leaks killing me bad or was he modded? or was it just ment to be?

Last time I checked it was in my sig, but I guess everyone just stopped looking there...

It's an 85 2.8L with a 700R tranny. 3.42 gears (I think, I don't feel like checking)

actually those jeep 4.0's have quite a bit of pep!
I raced one when my 82 camaro had the stock Lg4 and he slowly edged me out. believe me, I was embarrassed!
I also raced one in a Durango 5.2L and got beat fairly easily.

hey dont feel bad, man, my buddy has a 96 3800 5 spd camaro, and he can drive. he barely pulled a 4.0 jeep, but the jeep got a jump on him, didnt rev or anything, just chirped and left. my buddy jumped on it half a second later and barely got him by about 60. he pulled up at the next light and said sorry he ws ust pissed at his soon to be ex wife. that 3.8 is a prettyy quick engine though, and he barely pulled him in.

My friend has that same car, and my mother that same jeep. The jeep runs about 10+ 0-60 while the camaro runs about 7-7.5ish. Your friend must be a terrible driver.

At first I was like. Ohhhh, they beat a Jeep! Wow??? But I understand now, I don't know but does anyone else agree with me that the Jeep is not a race prepared vehicle? tranny, rear end, gears, torque. all must suck.

Well, was it 4 wheel drive? First 4wheeldrive I raced, I underestimated. Oh that f350, no big deal. The guy lunges of the line- no sqeal. Not to mention the fact that this 4wd diesel truck wasn't much slower than my LTD, but he hung me off the line.

The 4.0 in the Cherokees (XJ's) are a pretty quick engine! They have a bunch of torque (cant remember the # right now). The non HO 4.0's were 180HP, the HO ones were 190. I had one a few years ago, I beat alot of people in the stoplight to stoplight races. They do tend to have real good gears (low gears), they are ment for offroading, and climbing. The XJ I have now has 4.11's, but it's also a 2.8 v6 too.
Who knows what kind of mods were done the the Jeep that was raced above, lower gears installed, K&N cold air tube (yep, they make those for Jeeps too), TB spacer, ect.

My company car is a 99 Cherokee Sport. It comes with the "tow package" and is 2wd. It has 3.73's and the 4.0 engine. It is fairly quick and drives great. I have whooped many a Honda, 2.8 f-bodies (sorry guys), and many 4x4's. It sucks in the snow (no 4wd) but i great for jumping curbs and getting around town. I'm going to miss it, next year I'm getting the Liberty

I drove a 5 speed 4.0HO Jeep in 1998 when I was shopping for one for my wife. It's no slug. HP was 190, torque somewhere around 250.

You can get 'em with pretty steep gears (max of 3.7Xs with a 5-speed as I recall). Factor in the big tires and short wheelbase (good weight transfer) plus an optional trac-loc (posi) and you've got a vehicle that can LAUNCH.

But catch one from a 60 MPH roll and they're easy pickins. Aerodynamics of a brick, literally. Like pushing an entire Greek temple through the air.
