The 91' tpi would be quite a bit quicker than the RS. As far as beating your friends SS....probobally not gonna happen. You would need to drop over 2 seconds off your 1/4 mile e.t., and mods like that would cost you an arm and a leg.

You need a 2-stage nitrous kit about 400 HP. Then its time to buy another motor. Race him once for a lot of money or pink slips like in fast and flurries.

Seriously man if you wanna beat an SS its gonna take a LOT of $$ under the hood of either car. Like in the thousands.
Condition is first priority though. Gotta have a nice car. TBI 3rd gens are great "first V8-RWD" cars because they aren't extremly powerful and get away from you less, provided you don't go crazy with the throttle around corners . Insurance is also cheaper for an RS. I pay $1075 every 6 months for my Sport coupe (no RS in my year) and thats bad enough. But the Z will definately be much faster.

my friend came within an hour of racing and getting a '90 Mustang GT w/ a souped up motor... they were gonna race for pink slips. then it slipped that my friend didn't just ditch the 305 TPI and go for a 350 TPI. someone happened to inform the mustang owner that is wasn't even a 350 under the hood. it was a 406 under the hood and it used TPI. it has over 450 tq. (prolly closer to 500) and over 400 ponies. last time it went out to the track it ran a 12.1 spinning the tires practically the whole way... can you say time for Mickey Thompson's??? I can't believe my friend drove it all last summer. his pockets were practically empty because of how much gas it ate.

I think it would be quite hard to get someone to just give up a pink slip over a race. I mean ****, if you just lost even though you were stupid enough to race for the pink slip would you really give it? I would be like "yea, lemme get that for ya its in the glove box" (hears car start...scrrrrreetch)

It'll take more than engine work to beat him. You'll need real good power, proper gearing, suspension work to hook up, good tires...... You get the point. There's more to going fast than just gobs of power. Gotta be able to transfer it to the ground. Also, these are old cars and stuff is bound to break every once in a while (more than every once in a while in my case) and you have to add that cost into the car.

Dude.... there is no way in hell you're gonna be able to take a '98 Camaro SS unless you dump thousands into your car... and seeing as how you said money is an issue for you even buying the car, we can pretty much toss the whole idea out the window...

If money does allow you, buy the '91 Z28 TPI, trust me.

the cobra would whoop his ***, but agian the same answer keeps getting repeaded over and over, and one final sentence you have to do 1 of 2 things, 1) dump thousands into your ride, or 2) get a new car.

Actually you could get a 350 and T-Tops. And Id say get the cheepest third gen that is is clean in and out with a V6( cause it is cheaper ) and than go to the junk yard and buy a used corvette motor and drive train and drop it in. Its a little pricey but the only way you can get a 305 to be fast is under boost, and evan than a 350 with the same mods would be faster. Also it would be real easy and cheaper to fix up a motor and drive train if it is out of the car.
