1991 lazer...
1991 lazer...
Okay i've got a '91 Z28 with K&N and flowmaster. LB9/5 speed combo...I dont drive this car in the winter but I need to know if I can beat a '91 lazer. He's putting in a factory turbo, but he has aftermarket exhaust, intake, and cold-air setup. Its a 5 speed too...He can drive a stick pretty good but I have way more experience and I can launch my car pretty good. I raced him with my 2.8 berli about a week ago...when he didnt have his intake. Needless to say I lost, but at the end of second gear (60mph) he was about 2 car lengths ahead of me. He has his intake on now and he's putting on a turbo from another lazer that had it from the factory. I'm kinda skeptical but I think I still might be able to take him with my Z even if he does have a turbo. What do you guys think?

if he is installing a factory turbo, then he must be fwd. i think this should be a close race, but you will prolly win. you have the definite off the line advantage (torque + traction) and for him to get a good launch hed have to do it just right (if he launches on too much boost he'll spin em all the way through 1st)
good luck though
must be nice to have a 5 spd! stupid autos...

His car is only fwd. Yeah I was just a little worried about the power to weight ratio. He's a bit of the ***** type guy, and thinks his car is the fastest out there. But I know if I beat him, i'll have to race his friend. I havent seen this setup yet, but both of them say he has a 1989 daytona with 2 aftermarket turbos (didnt say what kind) but they say its "one turbo firing into another, making condensed air". It kinda sounds like
but its very possible he's running 2 turbos. Anyone know how would I fair against this "twin turbo" daytona?

I can't imagine how you'd get a sequential tubo setup to work on a 4 cyl. The only ones i know of are on supra and skyline inline 6s. What he probably has is a cold air intake and a turbo.
If he was only a few lenths ahead of you in the 2.8 (probably mid 17 second car) then even if he adds a turbo, you should kill him. Your mid 14 second car will beat a factory turbo car...but watch out once they start cranking up the boost. On sunday I raced my friend with a dodge daytona es turbo/5speed. He has done a few mods and has gone from getting destroyed by me every time, to running right along side me up to a hundred mph. Those little things love boost (18psi!!). Have fun, and keep it hammered!

how is a almost stock 305/5-speed combo good for 14's. I thought they run hhigh 15's at best. and the lazer is really light, so you need to try and match that, don't forget he can take his car past 7k rpm's. empty your glove box, what ever is in the car, maybe your spare and jack, and only run 1/4 tank of gas.
nope , an lb9/5speed combo in good running condition will do quite well at the track , most of the ones i have seen ran anywhere from 14.6's-15.2s consistently . they are very potent cars . especially with the g92 option , i believe its 3.42 gears (could be 3.23 dont remember) disk rear end
Actually I've haerd those Lazers aren't that light. Something like 3000 lbs? And yes those 5-speeds are good for mid to high 14s, look at 85transamTPIs sig, and thats with an auto. It should be a good race, but you could probably take him.
Im sure with my setup I can break my car into the high 14's. Those lazers are really close to 2500lbs...Not really light and the kid has got a big sound system in there too so thats gotta add some weight to it. I was wondering, what would a turbo'd lazer run in the 1/4 from the factory? With his mods that he has now its got to be worth at least .5 seconds off his time. I don't want to lose to this kid, he's very cocky and he's a *****, I'd like to know if I can put him in his place. We're going to line them up in the spring, when he's got his turbo.
I would say if he knows how to put a turbo on that car, then he will now how to tune it for more boost and less lag. I think if you beat him off the line you will win, otherwise he will take you. Good luck!

I don't understand what you mean by he's installing a factory turbo? Is the car a non-turbo and he's installing a turbo?? If so, for all the trouble it's gonna take he might as well just buy the turbo model right off the bat. If it's a 1991 Laser Turbo FWD it weighs about 2500 lbs. the stock quarter mile time for that car is about 15 flat. If he's going to put on intake, exhaust and a boost control it's definitely a 13 second car, although traction will be a problem. I knew a guy with a 1990 Laser with just a boost control and K&N air filter that ran a 13.8 at 102. Of course, this guy was a hell of a driver, but it can be done. DSM's Turbos are not to be underestimated. Hope this helps.

If the car only weighs 2500lbs or even 3k that's light. But you say you were close with your 2.8 minus his intake. So that would put him around a high 16 1/4 mile. I don't see him knocking off 2 seconds, but I could be wrong.

ok, in the origingal post, you said that he was INSTALLING a factory turbo? if so you should be able to win, IF he only has a few mods and can drive, plus its a fwd, so he can't launch it on very much boost or he'll roast the tires (heck if i even launch the torqueless civic too hard, it'll just spin'em to the rev limiter if i stay on it).
but what i dont understand is, if he's going to all that trouble to install a factory turbo in a non turbo car
why wouldn't he just get the upgraded turbo?

i figured as much.
if he's going to have it installed by someone else, then he prolly doesn't know much about what he's getting.
if he were smart, he would have saved money and had an upgraded turbo put on along with other goodies.
plus once he gets it back, he wont know how to drive it that well
you'll win for sure now,
but good luck anyways, may the dancing lala man be with you
