Finally got gears!!! Work great on the street

Well I finally got my 3.42 posi built and installed a Powertrax locker in aswell.......let me tell you that I have a completely different car now....and still don't have traction problems. In the past week I have raced several mudstains and I tear them up....took it to the track to find out what it run and I could'nt belive it. Run a 13.56, 13.59, 13.42................Best install I ever did!

Glad to hear you're happy with the gears you chose. Just wondering at what rpms you cross the line at? I'm sure not too much past 4500 rpms... Cause I remember you debating on :42 or :73s and like many had said 3:73s would have been too much for TPI.
I just wish someone would have pointed me in the right direction.

What were your times before the gears? And what gears did you have?

You gained that much w/only gears?! I wish I could have got some gears for my car before it died...which was only two days ago I know I would have been at least 13.70's with gears. I just know it would have.

what was your mph? are you still running the 305 tbi or did you switch to a 350? have you had any head work or anything else not listed in your sig? i'm just curious because those are great times for a 305 tbi. i'm hoping to be down there when i get my gears. if i can fix my traction problem. i should be in the high 13's right now but i haven't been able to make it out to the track yet this year.

so i'm guessing you don't have the crappy heads. if not then that sounds about right. if you could get more consistant you might be able to pull a little more outta it

Stock cam, too?!
You should head over to the TBI board for a little bragging.
That's the fastest I've ever heard of a 305 TBI N/A running.

That's why I'm getting 3.73 on the Cutlass...

My gears on the Cutlass most likely are worse than 2.73. And I figured 3.73, since that's what came on the performance cutlasses, that would be easy to find. Does anyone know how much the gears cost?

New Gears cost $200, and you'll need the install kit, running about $100.

There has to be something done to that car or the engine that you dont know about.... maybe you got a 350 crate engine or the clocks were off at the track. I wish I could believe that an LO3 with no headers/cam/head work can run 101 MPH without weighing 2800lbs. I think Camaroracer1992 had to use a 125 shot on his LO3 to run 102 MPH and that was with a few other mods including gears. NJspeeder is one of the fastest 305 TBI guys on the board and he isnt even running those numbers with edelbrock heads/headers and slicks.

No flame intended.....just saying that something here has not been accounted for

You know what, guess I should read a signature before I give my opinion, I totally agree with you, and to No4NJunk, guess you were right about me believing him and not you. Something has to be different with that motor that you don't know about, without headers that engine is choking.

Ok I will clear things up for you guys.

1. I have shorty headers just didn't put in sig. Because there very cheep and I didn't want cheep parts in sig. Name of headers.........Headman paid 89.00 for them.
2. Cam wise, to my knowledge the cam is stock, BUT, I have had several different people say that its not stock because of what I shift at........Maybe Target put a bigger cam in?
3. I have spent several hours among hours to get my car lighter!
Including cutting out ALL of the crash brace work from the front. Along with bracing under the dash. Removal of heater/Ac box......Aluminium water pump No name that I can find it was given to me..........Inside of the doors I have just enough metal to keep the widow track and door handle in place......to make it short if the car did not have to have the bracing it was cut out or Parts of the car was cut.............over a period of 1 1/2 years we managed to take alomst 400 pounds off the car I will be more than glad to make a long list if you guys would like.
4. There is noway the engine is a 350...........It is plainly stamped on the drivers side in the back 5.0......So this makes it a 305 correct. But there again it could be board something major....I don't know.
5. Timer off at Red River Raceway?????? I doubt it they have the big boys out there.....

So is there anything else I might beable to help clearify this post?

BTW.......I am in the process of building my 377.....and when I get it built I will be more than happy to tell you guys what was in the 305......without a problem

BTW #2 NO OFFENCE TO ANYONE....................

It won't be as bad as me though, since you at least make power to 4500 rpms with stock TPI, but you would have benefited more with 3:42s.

I am making power past 4800 rpm tho, I have the SLP intake runners and it pulls much higher than the stock runners.

That should be border line then, idrag2 says he crosses the line at 4300 rpms, you may run out of some gear, but I doubt anything noticable.
