water pump = dead
had my water pump and outlet hose to the rad replaced today.
I was driving around with a leak for a while until I finally figured that I'd go in to get it fix edsince It formed a lake under my car just at IDLE at my buddies place.
he told me to get the "fu*3" to the mechanic and so I did.
they said it took them an hour for the pump. they had to take out the fans and some shroud. can't remember.
kinda happy that it's fixed but kinda sad I couldn't spend that money on other parts of the car.
hoses and pumps and whatnot seem to be a problem on most of our cars huh?. it cost me $400 bucks with work included.
and the reason the pump was supposedly replaced was because of 2 holes which he showed me. they look might drilled to me so he might of lied. I'll take some pics soon.
any thoughts are welcome.
simon.

$400.... Holy KRAP. For that price you could have bought all the tools you needed to do the job, a new pump and still had $200 left over. I would suggest you start doing your own work because those little things add up fast.

Those little holes that look they were drilled are pressure release valves. When a water pump blows, that's where it will blow from. It prevents the pressure from the coolant from blowing other things such a rads, hoses etc. It's like a safety thing. If you are blowing coolant through those holes, your pump is cooked.
Jason is right though. A water pump, even though it is a little time consuming, is still a fairly easy job. As with all young guys starting out, my advice to you is get a Chilton or Haynes manual for our cars. They are available at CT. Learn how to do some of the simpler things on your car, until you are familiar with it. Then you can tackle some of the tougher tasks. Plus, we are here to help, just ask your questions and someone will have an answer for you. By doing this, you will save your hard earned money to do the things you really want to do.

New pump... I priced it at around $50 from Napa... gaskets... $2.50... tools... hell I got a complete set for $23... hose... $18.... coolant... $10.... work involved... not much really.. hardest part is taking the pulley off the the pump, and even that wasn't too hard.. just leave the belt on and loosen the bolts...
This is why I do my own work... mechanics that will bleed you...

well I guess.
I wouldn't know what tools to buy. and the belts? how do I know what goes where and loops under here and there
it's crazy under my hood. crazy I say! heh.
I wish I could. maybe I should take some freaking classes eh? engines for idiots like me.
me and my buddy where looking under the hood trying to find the leak and he commented that we where like two monkeys trying to figure out the problem. which is damn true
but I did find the leak! yeh yeh.
anyways.
$400 sounded alright too me for all that work.

What year is your car dood? All I had to remove from my car is the MAF sensor, Serpentine Belt and Water Pump, to replace the Water Pump. I got one straight from the dealer for 100bux (already painted black
) And it took me a few hours.. only cause I couldn't get the pulley off, and an annoying neighbor

Atleast it's fixed, dude. If you are having any other problems, just post them on here. Sometimes we actually come up with good advice...once in awhile
Let's just say that the money you spent is just another lesson learned, don't sweat it.

I don't see why they had to remove the fans.. oh wait... maybe to reach the lower rad hose bracket... but I was able to get my lower rad hose off without taking the fans out.. it was tricky, but I got it done

I looked at the bill for the install of the NAPA water pump. the reason it came to $400 was because they charged 165.00 for the installation and then something like 50 for the pump. the rest was all small stuff like the clamps and errr pressure testing. they also added some coolant and then taxes.
I wish I had a house with a garage so I could do my own work. argh!

You can do things like that in a driveway if you got the tools and can stay organized. But ya you couldve got some nice stuff for 400
.

man I didn't even know there was a gasket for the water pump. my install would have been half assed.
and how do you even diagnose a problem like that?
oh there's a big puddle under my car and it's green and a hose that goes somewhere is shooting out coolant all over the place. meanwhile the pumps pressure release holes that I had no clue existed are all the way open and leaking **** all over.
it's like a party under my hood. and I don't know anybody
heh...

hehehe. Well you better start introducing yourself or youll never know em
. Pretty much anything that bolts on the engine that handles air, fuel or coolant and has a metal to metal contact needs a gasket.
Id take kevins advice and go buy a haynes or chilton manual for your car. Lots of diagrams and diagnosing lists to find the source of a problem. Everybody has to start somewhere. goodluck

yeah my Haynes manual is alright but I need more pictures.
some of the wording they use is beyond me and they miss out here and there.
I might get another manual then.
I'll figure it out :lala:

Ya try a chiltons too then. Maybe using both will fill in the gaps that the other one misses. I got a dealers manual for 91 firebird/trans ams. Its freaking thick and man its amazing. Just reading it shows you what tools dealer mechanics are. Its so detailed any idiot (including me) can follow it. It has amazing diagnosing situations/sounds/feelings that suggest something is wrong with the car too. If you can pick one of these up for under a hundred definately snag it.

alright man NP.
it's the gaps that are messing me up. I don't wanna unbolt anything I don't have to or that might affect something else etc.
thanks for the advice.
or I'll just get a new WS6... ah damn wait I'm not rich.
