d'oh....in-tank fuel pumps

i love my block mounted mechanical pump

.....are you sure that the pump is toast? i would make sure it is right whoored before you do anything. do you hear it prime (buzzing sound) when you turn the key forward, ie without cranking the car?

anyway good luck with this one.

no sounds no nothing
I had half a million people look at it...
The conclusion its the fuel pump, because the ether didnt even start it up. (Ether quick start) and it always starts if u have fuel going into the system.
The cars toast, the fuel pump is busted, im flat *** broke and im stuck. And its 2 cold to work on this car anywhere right now and it just hit me at the worst time and I just dont know what to do right now.

i thought you had a job?

anyway, you sure are right about it being too cold to work on the thing. things will look up once you get the car fixed, though. hang in there....

maybe you can get some help and you can put the new pump in yourslef. theat way you would just need to buy and pump and filter and a few other things. this is a pretty big job, so you will save alot on labour if you can get some people you know to help you.

How long did it takes us to change yours this summer? Like 10 minutes?

Dave -> In tank pumps suck ***... Since it's not a show car, I would cut a hole in the floor unless you have access to a lift. Do a search on the big board... alot of people have done this.

Ok my friends going to think about it, mabye he will let me use his garage, mabye he will help me replace the pump also.
We lack everything here.
Tools, Knowledge and just about everything

NO macho stories about how u fixed a fuel pump in 10 min.
I dont think u can fix a fuel pump in 10 min. with dropping the tank!

I will be dropping the tank, I dont have the tools to cut the metal.
Im going to search around see what I can come up with.

jasons right..probably in this cause it would be easier for you to cut a hole in the floor to replace the pump. its definetly not the right way to do it, but in this case it will be easier for you and save you some money and will get your car back on the road faster.

thats an awfully big hole your gonna cut if your going that way. remember the lines that are connected to the pump. That come up and over to the drivers side. your lookin at a 2 foot by 1 1/2 hole for sure. thats even too small i think. good luck, but i think droppin the tank is way. it took me about 4 hours todo, on stands, and as high as they went.

droping the tank is definetly the proper and better way to do it, but in dave's case cutting the floor may be a more practical option....

i didnt see your edited earlier post there, dave. hopefully you and your buddy can figure it out. time to get a shop manual.

My dad had his done at a shop and it wasn't cheap.

The sad part is that cutting a hole is actually the easy way. If you don't have the tools to do that... you are pretty much SOL. This is not a job you can do in your driveway with a set of sockets.

I was just doing some research

Seems like you have to dissconnect ur back shocks? And your rear-axle so its easier to take the tank out, and than u have to make sure you have all the wires and stuff or else this and that can **** up? WHy does GM suck?

yeah man, this job is alot of work

a sawzall with a metal cutting blade should do the trick......plus you cant rent them

mark the area you want to cut, drill pilot holes at the corners to allow the sawzall to start cutting and cut out the area you marked. as Rochead said, you have to watch you dont cut any fuel lines or anything else.

Just FYI I wouldn't recommend cutting a hole. As has been mentioned above you'll have to cut a BIG hole to get it out. On these cars the sending unit is actually sitting on the top of the tank with the high pressure lines running across and over the edge of the tank with a 90 degree bend at the side. Even with the way the sending unit is mounted in the tank you likely won't get it out with much success anytime soon. I just did the fuel pump in my car and I can tell you that fitting the sending unit on and getting it in properly isn't a peice of cake with the thing out of the car, much less trying to work with the tank still attached to the car. You pretty much have to take the tank down to get it done right. I toyed with the idea of putting a mechanical inline pump into the lines underneath the car to get me by until I could fix it properly. In the end I decided dropping the tank was the best solution for me but maybe you could look into putting a pump into the lines as a temporary solution.

with my starting problem when it first started happening the fuel pump made that buzzing sound when it wanted to.

my crown victoria has that same sound. I trun the key and I can hear it initialize. put the key back to normal and it resets the pump.

with the gta the pump goes on and then I reset it. try it again and no sound.

unless the wiring is different and it takes more time for that fule pump to reset.

or it's fried.

make sure it's your fuel pump and not your fuel pump relay.

when i thought my fuel pump went, i too did not hear a priming noise or anything. i went to the shop, told them i need a new fuel pump.

when i came back to pick up my car, they said "$60 please". I was like WAHH? I thought it was going to be $600! They said it was the fuel pump relay....

Dave, give me a call tonight on my cell phone. Don't assume it's the fuel pump yet. I replied to your PM and I think I might know what it is. I'll PM you my cell phone number again.

IROCKER

well we tested the fuel relay, we hit the gas tank we tried it all..
We also sprayed a lot of ether agian, nothing..
There is no more gas smell anymore, no noise coming from the fuel pump. We tested every wire upfront, and they all light up with the test light, so thats it for that!

Are there any other things I can try chris?
I mean if all the units tested positive (meaning there working) than its gotta be that fuel pump. My friend was asking if there is anything else to look for? its not the coil or anything like that, so he says..

the electric fuel pump should have a fuse. i would find out which fuse it is on the fuse panel and check it just to be sure. its a very long shot for sure, but i would hate to see you tear your car down and spend alot of cash and have it turn out to be a fuse.

i just say your edited post there.....sounds like you checked put the power situation...

yo all my Fuses are A. OK
so thats it..

I called up my bud, told him when I can bring my car in, next week my car will be going in for the fuel pump change and tranny mount replaced.

I was taking a look at the fuel tank, guys.. my fuel tank is right behind the bumper. The rear-axle is no where near my fuel tank, I dont know why people keep saying to drop the rear-axle and stuff, my fuel tank is no where near the rear-axle and is barley in the way of the muffler, And it looks pretty damn easy to take it out, but I have no garage to do it now, and well I dunno, looks pretty easy to replace my self. Is this normal for my fuel tank to be this far back? If I get hit in the rear- its a forsure gas spill.

Getting the tank out is not that hard once you figure out what you need to get out of the way.

The rear axle must come down far enough to almost get the springs out, but nothing has to be disconnected. Be careful on your brakelines.

The muffler itself is probably the only real thing in the way, luckilly for me mine was welded lol... here comes the sawz all....

My straps were rusted, odds are yours are too. Get some replacement straps and bolts from GM, not that expensive. The tank comes out at an odd angle due to the filler neck. Careful not to force it around, the filler necks on our cars are notorious for cracking where the neck meets the tank.

Once you got it out the ring used is I think called a snap on ring or something. A screwdriver can get it out with a decent twist. Careful not to break anything as you want to reuse that piece. If you are in there change the strainer too, heck go get a sump built in it or something to prevent this from happening again and buy a decent pump to last you.

If you decide to use the sawzall on your tank, instead of taking it out, make sure your car doesn't turn into a ball of flame. Be careful with things that might spark.
