Chris, before I bought my Dakota I was looking for a 5 speed '97-99 Maxima SE. I love them. As you've probably learned, the 5 speed cars are hard to find and command crazy prices. Have you driven one of the 5 speed cars? With about $500 worth of bolt-ons your Maxima will probably be quicker than your IROC. I'm not saying that to be a dick, they haul. Sweet ride

when i was in the market of a new car, i was lookin at a SUBARU WRX. five speed the whole nine yards. I took one, twicw in two days. both times the guy let me go bysyself. I beat on that thing real bad. That little car, would EAT my car anyday of the month. That had to be the FUNNEST car I've driven EVER.if the price was a little lower, i would of bought it. 235hp, 5speed, 2900pnds,turbo and ALL WHEEL DRIVE nuff said.
Thanks to everyone for the comments.
Paul: No insult taken...this thing puts out 190HP from the factory, so I know it's no slouch.
Other than a K&N filter though, I'm gonna try to restrain from doing any mods on it...famous last words.
The 5 speed would have been amazing, but I just wasn't having any luck finding one.

I don't mean to be rude but those things are heaps of **** I so far know three owners that have nothing but problems.Nissan is no were near reliable as people put them out to be my friends dad works in the head office of nissan and even he admits it..
Such a shame, should have put that money towards a grand prix GTP or somthing.Ahh well to each its own

1FSTGTA: Dude I hate to break it too you but the Nissan could not possibly be any worst than my Sunfire...impossible! My 16 year old IROC has been in the shop less. I have complete confidence in the Maxima. I have no confidence right now in newer GM products...my experience to date with GM and the Sunfire was huge factor in deciding to go import. Of course this is my daily driver...the IROC is still here to stay and I have complete confidence in that car too.

Sunfires are the bottom end of GM you get what you paid for.Try a more higher class car of GM.The 3800 is in the top best best engines ever made,it is very reliable and stands up to pure torure. The new bonneville has a 5 star rateing in everyclass and is the first front wheel drive car to turn 200mph.If you wanted a daily/performance car GM is the way to go.The new grand prixs are pretty fast cars and are extremely reliable. Our 1993 buick has 423,000 kms with no problems aside from maintence.Imports are just not what people say they are.
Of course I'm in no way down playing the 3800 series engine as it has proven it self very well over time. Excellent powertrain for sure...I've owned one before and never had any complaints.
As far as the Sunfire being bottom end...the one I have retails for almost $25G's brand new...that's not chump change and I expect much more out of a car in that price range.
Not all imports are perfect...but neither are GM products. All manufacturers have their good ones and their bad ones...I don't think anybody can truly say that imports are better than domestics OR domestics are better than imports. It's just not that simple.

I thought I was the only one having problems with my Nissan. Everything was truouble free up until the 190 000km mark, then the **** hit the fan. Multiple electronic problems(little annoying things like my tack screwing up, all little LED illumination for the power windows and cruise control plus the digital readout on the radio won't light up) The air con died for the second time the quote to fix it was $1100 from an independant facility, last year the Cat under the car spit out the O2 sensor with no way to fix it other than replacement, Nissan wanted 600bux to fix that, I got an aftermarket one for 200bux.This year the forward inline cat clogged up so bad that I could barely get up to 100km, I thought the tranny went, when Nissan said it was the cat I was relieved until they told me it was an $1100.00 dollar job with labour and taxes. The clincher is that I can't find an aftermarket replacement for this cat. I got a friend to gut it. I get a burning oil smell from the engine bay now and I can see multiple oil leaks. The car has some pretty bad rust issues and I tried to maintain the body. The car does have 247 000 km on it, that is high but not for a Jap car. I know people with Honda's and Toyotas wit hover 400 000 kms that have had far less trouble. This is just my expierience. Maybe if you are looking to keep the car for a long time you should look at a Toyota or even a Honda, then again maybe the Maxima has a better reliability history than the Altima. Good luck

Another nissan product gone bad wasa friends 240sx he was on the highway and his brakes went out
used the e-brake to slow down..At least once a month he has to call his sister to give him a ride hom from work because it wotn start the car has 230,000k and hes had 3 rebuilds, nothing but problems. And I can guarantee for every import horror story you have I can give you an example or two for the domestics as well. There is no fool-proof solution...you win some you lose some.
