Jealousy?

Well I took my 'bird to work today for the first time since last fall. There are a few new guys there who hadn't seen them yet. One guy had just sold his 383 Camaro last week, I swear I thought he was gonna cry. lol

Anyway, I had popped the hood to show my brother how my fingernail actually marred my fuel rail (left a hole in my nail too). One of the other new guys, previously a mechanic, came over to take a peek. He seemed to be trying to force all sorts of odd suggestions as to what I should do with my engine. first, scrap the stock airbox and put a K&N directly on the TB. Sucking in hot air from there? Nope, he wouldn't hear of it. I don't even want a K&N to begin with. His second suggestion, replace the TB with a high-flow Holley unit. Overkill for a 305? Again, he disagreed. My suggestion of an AFPR? Worthless on a 305, according to him. I said I wanted a cam and chip from a 305/5 speed, he said to get a 350 cam. Uhh... Aren't they the same? It's like he was arguing just for the sake of arguing. I get enough of that from my brother... lol Whatcha think?

On the plus side, it's nice to have people walking on the street stop and watch my car go by, even if it is a measly 305.

Seeing that you have a 90 LB9, the camshaft in your car should be the same as the camshaft in the 5 speed cars and the 350.I believe the 5 speed cars usually got the G92 which includes the dual cat exhaust which makes up for the hp difference between the LB9 auto and 5 speed. At least thats how it is in the camaro world.

Sadly, clowns like the guy that was offering you advice are the reason that the world is full of slow modded TPI cars.

So I'm not way off base in disagreeing with this guy, right?

He also frowned upon my TB coolant bypass, saying that it can still get too cool outside during the summer mornings. Uhh... Cold enough to freeze a throttle body? When I said that since it's a summer car those lines only serve to heat up the incoming air he just nodded and said yeah, as though it was a good thing.

As for the cam, last I heard the 305/700R4s got the crappy cam (peanut cam?) while the 305/5 speed and the 350s got a decent cam and a better exhaust. Of course, I have been wrong before.

TPI's have decent cams... TBI's use the peanut cam. Check the tech data section off thirdgens main page for cam specs.

U are correct about the auto's. But not all 5-Speed got the good cam, Just ask Dan (D's89IROCZ).

I can get u the GM cam part #'s and spec's if U want them, I have the F-Body GM cam lists.

Is there an easy way to tell for sure what cam I have? It doesn't have enough guts to lead me to believe I have a decent cam, although I have never driven a 350 to compare.

take your car to the track , a good cammed 305 would be around 15 to 15.4 , peanut cammed cars are slow , 15.9 -16.1 ,

if you got other mods you do a little better

Don't know how accurate it is but in the tech data section it says that you can tell what cam you have by your tach. If it is yellow at 4500 and red at 5000 then you have the lesser cam and if it is yellow at 5000 and red at 5500 then you have the other. This might help

Amen. I wouldn't go any smaller than the LT4 production cam and even that is kinda small.

Double chk your cam #'s with the part numbers I posted on the KWF site and u shal know. Your Tach is the right one for the good cam. I cant remember what all options were avail on the 89 I think u didnt have the G92, not sure, but i do know that the 88-89 350/305 5-Speed had the best cams of all the years. I'd have to look it up again, I got a memory thats as good as an alzhymers patient.

Yep, my yellow line is from 4.5k-5k and red from there. I guess that just about settles the cam issue...

Guys, not all of us need or want stupidly big cams. Granted mine is wimpy but I don't really need anything more than the better 305 cam. Plus with the chip to go along with it it would be a drop-in job, no pissing around with burning proms.

Oh and this former mecanic was at it again. He asked my brother if he adjusted the front or the rear torsion bars in his Pathfinder. I haven't seen anything with rear torsion bars since a Tamiya XR311. A mechanic should know better. He also said I should've gotten pulled over when I had my temp permit in the window, although he may be right about that one (plates still on, stickers then expired).
