Classics in Ontario
Classics in Ontario
OK. so my 1983 Camaro is a classic now, and my 84 Z28 will be in 2 month's right?
If so.... does anyone know exactly what that means in terms of emissions requirements, and the value of the cars?
Also I was reading this thread about ontario drive clean, and hot rod status, and was wondering wether it's the displacement size of the block, or the casting of the block that matters. For example, would an LS1 block pass, or is it considered a 350 and therefore considered to be available for my model year ('84).
And onother thing, when i was talking to them the drive clean people last year, they kept asking me about what year body style. I hope they didn't mean they judge it on what year the car appears to be instead of the year it really is.
THanks for any insight guys

Hey, one more thing.
In the Camaro Performance Handbook by David Shelby, from Chapter 1: 'a brief history' it says that the v8's available in 84 where the LG4 and L69, which are both 305's as far as I know. In fact, according to the book, it looks like third gens didn't have 350's untill 86 in the 1LE package.
So back to the hot rod thing, does that mean any 82-85 camaro could gain the status with a 350?

yes to your final question. but my question is why do you care? you 83 is already emissions exempt (assuming you had it tested and it passed last time when it was supposed to be tested) and your 84 will be exempt in a month and a half (again, assuming it was tested and passed during the last time it was supposed to be tested).
yes, an LS1 would be considered a hot rod. an LS1 would be much better on emissions than an sbc, because of all the fancy computer stuff and its modern, emisssions friendly design.
once you car is 20 years old, you dont have to get it tested. now it is still illegal to remove any emissions equipment the car originally came with (hahhahah).
in reality, once the car is done its etest career, you can do whatever you want .....just dont get pulled over by those roving etest patrol clowns...they can write you tickets for not having emissions equipment where it should be. and these tickets wont be small.

I was told that even though my LT1 was a different engine that a gen 1 small block, it was the displacement that mattered.
No 86's came with a 350, so I was set for Hotrod. I brought the original dealer info pamphlet for proof on the no 350.
I always understood it included the type of motor; ie generation.
It also seems that this is not very clear to many....any test locations, I have heard many different things from other shops/people on here. Its almost a dice roll when trying to use the hotrod status, but you should be able to get it done somewhere if required.

scary story: friends dad friend (i know lol) had a 76 vette and it was emissions exempt so he ripped out all the emissions stuff. Well he got pulled over by the smog police and no cats + no smog + whatever else it had = about a thousand dollars worth of fines. Be warned the smog police are out there.

a friend of mine has a 1978 chev pick up truck, it was missing the charcoal cannister, they banged him $380, and they said that if he was missing anything else it would be the same for each infraction.
