All the emissions crap still has to be on the car and functional even though it doesn't have to be tested again.

you may not need a test but you still need to meet the emissions standers for your car and year.

that means a cat also. IF you get stopped for any reason you can be ticketed for not having a cat. last time i checked it was $1000 fine.

no cat will make a big dif in the tone, way more than going to a 3"

just changeing the type of muffler will also make a big dif.

what do you have on it now?

i have a flowmaster muffler and 3 "pipes with a high flow cat

u said when u put a state pipe were cat was it will make a diffrence in tone, is that a good diffrence?? how would describe the diffrence?

Yes- a catalytic converter will help with emissions reduction even if no other emissions devices remain on the engine.

As other people have noted- if you get stopped by one of the recent rolling emissions checks (they will stop anyone/everyone as they feel) and you have factory emissions devices removed- you could be looking at some serious fines. However- since you have nothing left BUT the cat.- it's too late for this unless you're prepared to reinstall everything else.

If your cat. isn't plugged there's really no reason to remove it. In fact, we could be funny and say you'd be irresponsible for removing a perfectly good cat., putting in a straight pipe and spewing more crap unnecessarily into the atmosphere.

i did not like it.

with the cat off my exhaust stunck and the car was to loud. i now have one back on.
its up to you. if you want to run the risk of a big ticket if your stopped. not worth it in my case. that $1000 could go a long way for other mods to make the car faster

Personally I would say screw it put in a straight pipe. You really arent going to be able to tell how much a 3" cat will change your tone until you actually go put one in.

It will help with flow a bit but I dont know about sound. If you already have headers and a catback though I cant see upgrading to a 3" cat making any big difference.

I punched my cats last summer, it didnt sound all that diferent then it did when they were there, but now it stinks.

I h8 the smell of it so I'll be putting two new cats on it this summer. That and the fact the polution police are starting to really crack down, I dont want no $1000 fine per cat.

Depends how much power you're pushing through there. Really a 3" would be ideal to match your catback however if yer only slightly modified I wouldn't worry about it. You could always put on a y just before the cat and have a dump. Then no worries when it's actually time to get off the street and compete.
