Dinged on Cross Border Duty

Guys,

Bought a TCI tranny pan from Jay (Jagevileye21) in Detroit. Asked him to mark "gift" on the customs papers which he did. He wrote "transmission parts" on the customs declaration paperwork.

Had to pay $ 28.40 in duty through canada post. Turns out they ding for car parts even when marked as gift. BEWARE.

There may be no duties, but there's still taxes.

The lady at the counter said it was because I had car parts shipped and customs do not consider car parts as "gifts". Even if the documents have "gift" marked off which mine did. Next time I might ask the shipper to amrk it as something else and not put the full value down on the form.

Next time, try marking it as a warranty exchange with a fake bill inside saying so. If customs decides to open it, they will see a reciept saying warranty exchange with a $0.00 value inside. Works everytime.

gift value is only good up to $60

are you sure it was not the broker fees that you had to pay?

If the package is over $20 and it is from a business, you will likely have to pay $5 brokerage fee and GST & PST even it is marked a gift. When you buy stuff from private sellers and the item isn't too pricey, you can usually get away with not paying tax if its marked as a gift.

I had some Tail lights and housings shipped from NJ with the tag marked as so, and marked gift with a $100 value and I paid nothing. I have everything shipped via USPS and only had to pay once, because of weight.
