Actually you may want to check the starter solonoid.------------------

Does your car have VATS?(not sure if it was available in '89) If you have a chip key then your car has the Vehicle Anti Theft System. On occaision my car will refuse to start. When you go to turn on the car and it will not start, the security ligtht will stay on(Located on the instrument panel). This means that VATS has dissabled the ignition system for about 20 minutes. My car has done it twice, once my wife put the trunk key in the ingition and it refused to start, once it just wouldn't go. The resistors in the ignition and key will sometimes wear out causing this problem. You can bypass the system. If your car has VATS and you think this is the problem, do a search on the electrical board on how to bypass the system if you don't want to spend $400.00 bux to fix it.

If it doesn't crank every now and then, it's something to do with your starter... either the solonoid is sticking, or you have a bad connection. If you can here it spinning inside the housing.. it is sticking.
Sounds like a bad connection at the starter or even the battery. If it is not a bad connection at one of these places it could be a bad battery. Sometimes one of the plates will come loose when a battery gets old and it will lean over and short out on one of the others. Just getting in and out of the car could cause it to move. (it could happen) if not one of these it is probably a bad ignition switch.

it sounds like your starter. next time it happens take a hammer and tap the starter with it. you mite have a dead spot in it. a very common problem with them. it could also be a bad ground that would let every thing work but under a large load (high curent)during starting become resistive and not start. however if it is this you should still get something when you try to start it. i would check the starter first

Liquid, some advice to you... buy a hanes manual for your car and read... do not be afraid to attempt to do anything yourself on your car but please read as much as you can first...read the posts in other sections of this forum.. learn hw to describe your symptoms as accurately as you can.. Describing a problem very very accurately not only makes it easy for others to help you diagnose your problem it tells them that they can skip the basics and get technical.. for example saying:
"all i know is the car is all fine except for that problem... it starts 99% of the time but now and then it doesnt wanna start... all the electrical **** works but the engine DOESNT turnover... the fan comes on and all the lights work but i dunno... maybe bad wireing to the starter?"
say... im having intermittent starting problems.. the car normally starts fine but once in a while i will turn the key and hear a buzzing noise but the car doesnt start (solenoid)... or i turn the key and i get clicking noises (Battery?) or i turn the key and the power to everything goes off and i hear nothing at all(Short??) I checked the starter and the connections are clean(No corrosion (green) on the wires?) and the wire from the battery to the starter looks fine..(Not burnt on the manifold) i had the battery tested and it can handle a load fine(Wallyworld will do this for free!!)
Search the site.. get a haynes manual and look up your symptoms in the trouble shooting section.. do all the obvious first and then ask for help with informed questions... Learning about these things at first isnt easy but take this approach and in a few years you'll be on here answering questions..
Just my advice to you..

Well the advice will still hold for any other newbie to this forum or to cars in general.... weve all been there and were all thinking the same thing... "my dad (or brother or uncle or fill in the blank) must have thought i was an idiot, i pray that i was never that naive" weve all done stupid things and learned from them, a lot of people have helped us along the way and we need to do the same....

You may want to check for carbon buildup in the throttle plate. I had this happen to me and the car wouldn't want to start every now and then.

I'm wondering if Inferno isn't just some one line joker who gets a laugh out of posting questions about things like not being able to find the light switch in a vehicle with a generally standarized instrument layout. No one is that green.

I was going faster than I'd ever gone before but then I fell off.
I don't find that hard to belive about the tickets.. In the first 4 hours of having my IROC on the road after this winter when I picked it up from high tech racing I racked myself up a $170 ticket and a $110 ticket. One week after that I got another $110 ticket. Then things died down for almost a month until I got yet another $110 ticket. Then I lasted almost two months until getting nailed going 100 in a 60 then 11 days later I got nailed doing 90 in a 60. The 100 in a 60 I got off by some miracle with just a warning but then next one for 90 in a 60 I got a $40 ticket because he reduced it. I'm 19, I drive a black 12 second iroc, and I talk to a lot of cops

and about the rust... i didnt check it very carefully for rust before i bought her... there was one patch of rust on the floorpan and a spot behind the front right wheel... and the tickets were for not having insurnace and not haveing registration papers... and about the lights, i thought it was a button not a pulling thing... hope that explains everything...
