Headers..... Another Post

Hey guys... trying to manage my cash, my question is... Are the headers really worth it? How much added performance will I see (roughly). I was thinking of simply replacing the Y-Pipe, and keeping factory manifolds. In my own opinion, I think the factory Y-Pipe is the most retrictive part of the exhaust (tons of crimps and garbage)... So, thats my theory, if I do the Y-Pipe, it should give me a near similar performance increase as the Headers would. Give me your $0.02 please

Thanx

Here is a pic of the custom exhaust I had done

The factory y-pipe is garbage. I don't think the manifolds are any better either. The 350 TPI cars have slightly bigger manifolds than the 305 LG4s did. Not sure what motor you have in your car, or if you want to keep manifolds for some reason, but the 350 TPI manifolds might be an option. I'd get a set of headers and a y-pipe for your best hp gain. You could get just the headers and have a shop fab up a 3" y-pipe for you. I think most aftermarket y-pipes are 2.5"

Nice exhaust BTW. Is it polished? Looks pretty shiney in the pic

Agreed the stock y-pipe and manifolds are crap...but I don't think the y-pipe is as restrictive as the manifolds are. Personally, I'd do both at the same time...but if money's an issue, I'd do the headers before the y-pipe. I think you'd get the best bang for your buck that way.

Yeah.. problem is... I do headers, Y-Pipe has to be done... I think I am leaning toward breaking the bank and getting both. Its just that I have to repair the gas tank (stupid filler tube is loose.. grrrrrrrr) and get the valve seals done.. theres a grand right there... i dunno... T1T's or Tires, It'll cost you money.. used to be my dad's favorite saying... but isn't it the truth

I agree, take an extra month or so and save some extra cash to get both done at once. That's exactly what I plan on doing, I'm not doing one without the other and because it's not affordable right now, I'm waiting till the summer instead of the spring. And trust me, it's not easy being patient.

How about these smilies:

And one of my all-time favorites:

What a horrible sound clip that was...Too much idle and not enough stomping on the gas pedal! I've got a Flowmaster (80 series I believe). I recorded it with my laptop and g/f's mic. I guess it's about time I redid it now.

If you need yours recorded or something let me know. I can bring my laptop if we meet up in the spring.

ahhhh.. good idea.. I had a laptop that I needed for school, got rid of it, needed money for more inportant stuff. My friend has a laptop, I'llsee if i can use it.

I have the same muffler. When you rev it up, and the engine decelerates, do you get a lot of popping? It sounded like it... mine is the same way.... I can't wait to hear my baby again

Just so you guys know, the SLP headers come with a y-pipe. The y-pipe SLP sells idividually will not bolt up to their headers if you choose to get them a little later down the road. The stock manifolds turn down at a different angle than the SLP headers. Nathan, how far do you plan on going with the engine? I mean to what level do you intend to take the modifications to?

well.... I'll give a list of what I got done so far..

3" mandrel bent exhaust with high flow cat and flowmaster muffler
Modified Air Box (soon to be SLP Cold Air)
Ported Plenum
Air Foil
MSD GM Blaster Coil, Cap, Rotor, and Wires
AFPR
Performance Resouces Chip

As for future stuff... I plan on getting a crate engine and building either a 383 or Chevy 302... still with TPI, but from Accel/Lingenfelter. decent cam and all that fun stuff

I get a little bit of popping if the engine is not completely warmed up. I'm not concerned

Nathan, your car is a beauty and you've got some great mods.

One word for the wise --> get your repairs done first otherwise you have a modified but still broken car.

Richard.
