What ECMs from what cars can I replace the one in my Bro's 86 IROC 305 TPI with???
I've had a super high idle problem that I couldn't fix, so I took my Brother's 86 IROC into a shop to run it on the diagnostic machine. They say the ECM is fried, and is throwing out crazy codes for no reason after a few minutes running. They want like $400 to replace that with labor (and replace TPS) which is totally ridiculous I'm sure. I'm fairly sure I can get a new ECM from the boneyard for $50ish, and I already have a stock computer chip as well as the ADS chip in the bad ECM (going to swap chips first to see if that is it)...
I need to know which ECMs from what other cars will work in the 86-87ish MAF TPI cars for when I go boneyard hunting. Again, I don't need another prom... And a GM part number for the ECM couldn't hurt if anyone has that handy too...
Thanks ahead of time for any info...
BTW, they also say the TPS is out of wack testing just sitting there, so I figure I'll replace that as well. Anyone have an idea what those run? They want $400 to replace that and the ECM...

That's the kind of stuff I'm looking for, the V6 Fbody ECMs will work?
I was told for SD TPIs, the ECMs from pretty much all V6 GM cars, like Coriscas and similar will work. Is that the same here only for a MAF car? ECMs from the same year from most V6 cars will work for 86-87ish MAF TPI cars?

Only certain F-bodies used the 1227165. V8 TPI F-bodies and Corvettes from 1986-1989. However, the moment you tell a wrecking yard you want an "F-body or Vette" ECM, the price goes up.
There were a variety of other vehicles that also used the 1227165. Any 1986 2.5 4cyl TBI "P" (8th digit of Vin) LQ5 with a manual transmission. Plus 1987-1991 small trucks with the 4 Cyl TBI engines. This is the "usual source" for guys looking for the 1227165.
Go here for Cross Referecnce

PS: Though it MAY be the ECM, it's probably the TPS that's gone. When the ECM is "fried" it generally throws "NO CODE" or "CODE 51". Get away from those yahoos.
Also, look at getting Craig Moate's Software for the 1227165. The software is free and you just have to make/buy a cable. Go to the DIY Prom Board and do a search on "Craig Moates".

ECM's from Corvettes and S10's and s15's
are exactly the same numbers. Go to any reputable salvage yard and they will be able to tell you that. All that is different is the chip.
edit, sorry no pics not technically related to the post.

Got it taken care, apparently it was the ECM. Purs like a kitten now. Thirdgen Resource at the top of the page has the ECMs for like $45 plus shipping if anyone else wanted to know... I found a local boneyard with it for that price as well.
Glenn, the "throwing all kinds of codes" was a mis-statement. I was going on second hand information from my father dealing with the shop and he reworded what they said, changing the entire meaning to me. Apparently the ECM wasn't throwing any actual codes, but was just spitting out all kinds of bogus info to the various sensors and such...
Oh well. Cheap enough fix. Thanks for the info all.
