Cam options for a 89 305 TPI

What is a good "Above Stock" cam for the 89 305 TPI. What I am looking for is good street driving, but a little extra punch over the stock one, which I have seem referd to as a pea nut cam. the tranny is the 700R4, and I believe that this will have the milder cam in it. What have you used, and how did it work out. The car will be primarily a daily driver, and I have no notions of being able to beat a 350 powered car, I just want a little more punch.

Thanks

What rear gears do you have? And are you running a stock stall?

The simplest way out is to just buy a L98 350 cam which is what was put in 5 speed 305's. It is a better than the one you have in there now.

tpi_roc,
I do not know the ratio yet, I have to get under there and pull the tag. But the converter is stock, and I may keep it there unless I can get a good reason not to.

Take those two things into account when picking your cam

If you're running anything short of 3.08 then you'll really want to take it easy on overlap

I would pick the ZZ-3/ZZ-4 cam, I am running that cam in my 1988 305 and it idles and pulls well. The idle is smooth at 750 RPM and the engine pulls strong all the way to 5750. The low end torque is still strong, I can drive thru town in 5 th gear at 1000 RPM and still excellerate smoothly. The ZZ-4 cam will require new valve springs and you might need to have your valve guides machined down to accept the lift.

YES, the ZZ4 cam would be a good choice. If you are looking for a low cost alternative an LT1 cam will slide right in and it'll be slightly better than a stock L98 cam is.

hmm....your still victim to the typical brainwashing. a healthy stock 305 TPI equipped with the 5-speed will smoke the **** out of the TPI 350, i do it ALL THE TIME to my buddy's Formula 350 w/ 96,000 original miles. ive got an '87 Formula with the TPI 305 and T5 manual and for all stock with simple free mods it hauls @$$! just look at classic Pontiac brochures and old magazines (late 80's vintage), the TPI 305 5-speed was the hot setup from the factory. so have fun with your LB9 and dont persecute it yet.
