TPI questions

ok here is the deal I have an 84 Z and want to convert it into a TPI set up I would like to put a 350 in it. so naturaally I have some questions that need answered.

1. my speedo is cable driven, what all needs done to make it work with the cable? and will my cruise still work?

2. what all will need done with the wiring? just the engine comprtment or is there more that I need to change? is there a big bulkhead connector that I can just change the under hood harness?

3. will my AC still work ?

4. I have an auot trans and I was wondering what all needs done to make it work propperly with the new set up?

Depends what year TPI system I guess. Later TPI used a VSS or Vehicle speed sensor to tell the ECM how fast the car is going. I have a 92 speed density in my 89 RS which uses a mechanical speedo. I have a dual VSS sensor on the tranny, sends the signal to the ecm and has a hook up for mechanical cable. Don't remember were I bought it.

Several companies make harnesses. Painless sells a stand alone. Other companies can make you a custom harness that will plug into your existing stuff.

3. will my AC still work ?

Sure, as long as you get the brackets for the TPI set up.

4. I have an auot trans and I was wondering what all needs done to make it work propperly with the new set up?

What kinda tranny do you have? TPI ecm will be looking for a lock up torque converter.

Check the tech articles and study them. This will help you come up with more defined questions.

I wouldn't call it "all mighty". It's a decent system.

Sorry this is off topic.

Rob P, I noticed you had the SLP cold air intake. Do you think it was worth the money? Any gains?

No, I cannot claim any gains. I did have a homemade cold air, 3inch pvc with a K&N filter under the driver side battery box. The SLP seems much neater and I only paid like $100 for it used. I like neat.

Nothing
Yes, might have to mod and or reroute the cruise cable though.

You'll have to remove all the wiring associated with the ECM. Best bet is to start at the ECM and work your way towards the engine bay. There is a large bulkhead connector on the pass side that it will all go through. Good luck getting a GM harness cheaply though.

3. will my AC still work ?
Yes. if you wire it all up with the new harness.

You should have a 700R4 so all you'd need to do is connect the harness connector to the trans.

Do you know what year started that? I have a 87 TPI with the speedo dead and the ECM throwing a code 24 (VSS toast).

Your 87 should be mechanical, the VSS signal is dead because it mounts behind the speedo and "counts" the revolutions of the speedo head. If your cable broke your speedo and VSS would both be dead.

If you can get a 90+ speed density system that would be best, BUT you will need a custom prom to disable VATS (or know what value resistor you need to bypass it)

Other than that, go for an 86-89 MAF system, the parts are plentiful and no VATS.
