Vortech Heads, Cam?

What cam is everyone finding to work best with the vortech heads? It will be put in a daily driven 305 TPI 5spd with SLP runners, vortech base/heads and full hooker exhaust

Also can you just add new valve springs to get more lift or do you have to machine the heads to get them to fit?

At sdpc2000.com it says .450" lift for the vortech heads. They also say they sell ones with more lift but you have to phone for details.

I was wanting to run the hotcam but it needs .525" lift with 1.6 rocker arms. I think I'll contact them and see about the Vortechs with more lift.

TPI_ROC is 3.8TransAm running a 305 or 350?

You need to machine the valve guide diameter and height to run more then .450 lift with the Vortec heads. The diameter needs to be machined to allow the use of aftermarket springs that can operate with more then .500 lift. If you don't machine the guide diameter the spring dampers will bind on the guide and fail. The guide heights need to be machined to make sure you don't have retainer to guide interfearance.

The Ram Jet crate motor uses 99 L31 springs and I'm pretty sure the Vortecs are completely stock 99 castings. And it has .490" lift.

Bjankuski how much did it cost to have the machining done to your heads? Also did you have a custom chip burned for that cam when you made that run in your sig or is it on the stock chip?

I don't know what the machining cost was because I bought the heads with the machining already complete. The run in my sig was with a custom chip but the stock chip was almost perfect to start with. The custom chip only picked me up 4 HP over the stock chip. The ET and MPH in my sig was with the stock chip.
