bad gas mileage
I've done some searches but not sure what could be causing my bad mpg. I currently get around 13 mpg in suburb driving. I drive calm most of the time and stomp on it occasionally. I've replaced the plugs, wires, cap & rotor, fuel filter, air filter... and I never put the a/c on. The car has been like this since I bought it one year ago.
It runs like crap on 89 octane so I have to run 92. This is killing my wallet, anyone have an idea what it could be? Also I notice my car is a little hard to start when warm, unless I've just put some gas in, then it starts immediately like it was cold.
Thanks for any help.

I forgot to add that when I first got the car it didn't pass emissions so I got the O2 sensor replaced by some (which I found out later) ****ty shop who fried 2 of my wires when replacing it. I passed emissions after but barely, so could the O2 sensor be damaged?

Its not the original sensor, about a year old. But I think the performance has been consistent since its been replaced, although I think I remember the performance being a bit less with the new O2 sensor.
Could setting my timing with a cheap timing light be inaccurate? Also how can I check to see if my timing chain hasn't jumped any notches, my motor has a bit over 100k miles on it. I get no codes, but could some of my emissions equipment be defective? I think a while back I ran 89 octane and under hard acceration I got a code for the knock sensor, then lost all power. Had to shut off the car to get the timing to return to normal. If my cat's are original could that be hurting mileage also?

The car has always been bad on gas and like I stated above I changed the fuel filter. Could it be that the fuel filter from crappy tire is crap?
Hey I work at Crappy Tire. 76th and King George. I never tried the filter from Can tire.
If you've replaced all the basic tune up parts, you should probably think about looking at the sensors next.
Maybe try getting the injectors cleaned at a shop. I did this and it did make a difference in fuel economy.

ok, well you should be running high octane, i have an '87 305 TPI and it says to use premium. I'd try running some injector/fuel system cleaner through it for ***** and giggles, it's only a few $, what could it hurt?

Hmm I'm having the same problem, 13 mpg... Didn't pass aircare, I passed the NO one but not hyrdocarbons or carbon monoxide. I've got 3 months insurance to get it fixed, along with the 50 other this I gotta fix on it... I'm in North Burnaby btw...
I found someone else that works at Wolf Chev Olds on boundry with one too...
He mentioned he had a mechanic that retarded his timing to lean it up and he passed...
