Relays

I am all set to do my swap from 870-165 ECM's but the local parts stores don't list the MAF burn off or power relays. I THINK I remember reading several years ago that the fuel pump, MAF power and burnoff relays are inter-changeable, anyone know for sure if this is true or not? If it is I am all set and have the relays in hand already.

Thanks

P.S. I'm talking pre 89 relays here.

A relay is a relay. Any relay will work if you know how to hook it up. Especially if they're all automotive relays When I did the '165 conversion on my friends's 85 Z28 we used good old fog lamp relays for 3 bucks a piece.

Well no, not all relays are the same. What I am asking is if they are "inter-changeable" as in swap the FP relay and MAF burnoff relay and have them work correctly. While I am sure you could "rig" just about any relay with the correct switching to work, I am looking for a cleaner install than that would entail.

Well doh... of course you cant just swap them and they will work. But if you know what the two coil connectors are and the the three "source" "on" and "off" wires are.... then it's JUST a matter of hooking the correct wire to the correct terminal. There's no "rigging" involved. If you have to ask about swapping relays then you're already "rigging" it. LOL

No, it isn't being "rigged", this will be exactly like the factory install, I already have the relay connectors and wiring and want to hook it all up just like GM did to keep things uncomplicated.

I'm not trying to be a wiseass but if you do a little research you can find out yourself.

Get out the schematics for your car, out of a chilton's book or somthing, and look at the FP relays and MAF relays. If the terminal numbers match (example: if the two coil wires are pins 1 and 3 on one relays and they're the same on another relays) then you can interchange the relays no problem.

If it were that simple I would have done that. The 870 system didn't have MAF power or burnoff relays, they had a module that did it all. My schematics are useless for this.

Right... there's a webpage somewhere. I think it's Michael Davis's page that shows step by step what pins and what wires go where. Is that what you're going off of ?

No, I just have a paper that tells what pins come from where and where they go to for the 165 hook up.

GM relays for the years 86 to 89 (MAF systems) are listed as -

1. Fuel Pump 14078915 (early) & 14089936 (late)
2. MAF power 10067925
3. MAF burn off 10094701
4. Fuel pump 14078915 (early) & 14089936 (late)
5. Electronic spark control module 16125261

Realize that when you go to the parts store for the relays by the numbers above, some will be physically these same with like numbers so you might be alright now. The difference between the late and early is simply the shape of the relay and not its function.

Thanks, I have the PN's for all of the relays but no one around here lists anything but the FP relay.

Man, I wish I would have seen this post earlier and saved you some of the arguing. I just recently changed all of my relays, when I called the dealer, they had to order both of them, so I did some research and all three relays are the same. You could use the fuel pump relay for either the MAF power or burn-off connectors. Hope this helps.

Woah! They aren't the same!

I've been doing some diagnostic work with my wiring and replaced the fuel pump and MAF power relay. According to my wiring diagrams (1987 T/A - Helm Manual), each relay is DEFINITELY different. I know from experience that if you hook the MAF power relay to the fuel pump relay's wiring, the fuel pump will run at all times.

Really, I've already done that and I didn't have any problems. The reason I know is because I thought I changed the MAF burn-off relay, and it was accually the fuel pump relay, and it still started and ran. Plus the pump still primed for 2 seconds and didn't continually stay on.
