Cold air Vs. Ram Air

I don't think I've ever seen a post about this but I thought I'd ask. Alright an 87 5.0 TPI originally it has the dual snorkel. Now what would be better to gut the snorkel and put in a ram air that goes from the openings in the front to the gutted box. Or just run a cold air induction package towards the corner and put on a cone filter? All answers welcome and I'd like to hear if anyone has actually compared these two different set ups. Thank you.

I've never done what you are talking about, but I know that a real "ram air" effect is practically nonexistant below about 180 mph. You'll see more benefit from the intake sucking in cold air, even without a ram setup. If you install a cone filter, mount it in the fender and maybe even shield it from the rest of the engine bay so it gets cold air, not hot. I've heard things like for every 10° drop in intake air temp there's a 1% increase in HP and a 3% increase in O2 density.

When speaking of cars, generally Ram Air and Cold Air have the same effect. It's just a matter of where your getting the air. The idea is to get the coolest air possible with the least amount of turbulance. Besides, Ram Air was just a name Pontiac used to advertise their cars and engines.

Removing the stock snorkel set-up makes no sense, it will support WAY more power than you need. Not only does it flow good enough, it already breathes cold air, and it looks good on there, unlike 99% of the homemade 'cold air' setups that most people make. And if you were intending on buying a cold air set-up from someone like SLP, save the money for something you need.

As for ram air. Dunno, some people seem to think they got great gains from it. i've personally never bothered with it since the most reputable sources i've read never seemed to get more than a fraction of a mph out of it. Besides, i'd rather have that air flowing into my tranny cooler anyway.

does anyone have any pics of these types of setups?
I have been considering cutting the bottom of the hood on my GTA below the front louvers and using them for ram air intakes, the problem I am seeing is that i would have to actually cut a bubble into the hood to clear the radiator.
I was just curious if this has ever been done or something like it.

Give me a break. This topic comes up every 3 days at least. Try doing a search, there is more mindless blather on this topic than probrably any other on this board, and well more than you can ever read.

Some people have even gone to the extent of mounting pressure sensors on various parts of the car, and have come to the conclusion that it really isnt worth anything. At most with a Ram air setup You May gain 1-2 hp at 230 mph ( exageration ) So Give it up already.

You people need to stop worrying about Cold air and RAM air and start spending your time and money on modifications that will actually make a differance. Like ed said the stock Dual snorkel has and will go faster than you ever will, so stop worrying about it.

This topic is even worse than the 48/52/58mm TB thing, and isnt even really worthy of discussion. This is more of something I would expect to see on a 4thgen board, Right alongside the Hypertech PP threads.

the carmaro intake is already "cold air" if you gut the air boxes.

I dont mean to raise any arguments, it would appear that this is a touchy subject, but I am trying to learn a great deal of new things and one of the things I have learned is that if you increase the amount of air the engine gets then it will increase the power of the engines output, which makes sense to me knowing how an engine works.

To me this means reducing the number of bends in your air intake path and attempting to shorten that path as much as possible. Also to use a better performing (ie free-er flowing) air filter.

What I have not learned is exactly how much better the engine will perform. There seems to be a major division among people on this board on this topic and it is confusing.

Incidentally why should I spend hours researching a subject when someone else already has and there are many of those folks that are just as willing to share their knowledge and experiences with another? It would be foolish to forego tapping into that resource and I am of the belief that this is one of the reasons this message board exists. Not that I simply do not do any research but it seems that person to person research does not qualify someone to post on the board according to some.

This is not directed at any person or groups of people and is not intended to be a "flame", it is just disheartening to try and learn something when you (or I) are mocked and scoffed at publicly.
