Tuning my TPI ******HELP******
Tuning my TPI ******HELP******
Hello I have an 88 formula 305tpi. My problem is with tuning the beast. I can set the timing perfect with the tan black wire disconnected but as soon as I shut the car off and connect it and start the car the timing is no longer set. Does anyone have an idea of what the problem might be. And then it runs like crap until it is warmed up. Thanks, Aaron

The timing will change when the wire is reconnected. When it is connected the computer is controlling the timing and it won't sit at the "base" setting like when the wire is disconnected.
You need to tell us what you are setting the timing at when the wire is disconnected. It should be 6*

When you connect the black/tan wire, your ignition timing is always gonna be different than with it disconnected. This wire is the electronic advance. it's kind of like setting the timing on a vacuum advance distributor, you have to unplug the vacuum when setting the timing, once you connect the vacuum line, your timing advances
Well I am setting the timing at 6 degrees from 0. The car runs ok when it is warmed up but when If first start it, it runs like crap until it warms up. I was just curious what the problem could be.
If only runs bad when its cold make sure your CTS is in range sometimes they go bad and make the computer richen the micture. Also check that your IAC is working properly that can cause your Symptom as well.

The CTS is the sensor you see sticking out the front of the intake below the throttle body. Your heater hose return will next to it. The IAC is attached to the bottom of the throttle body. If the car is running OK after heated up, it is more than likely OK. Do you have the timing set at 6* below or above TDC.

Or slap a scantool on it and take readings off the sensors when it is running poorly. You can post the info here if you are not sure what is normal or not.
