where can I get a EGR valve that isnt a universal one

Besides the stealership, where can I get an EGR valve for my car that isnt one of those universal ones that has about a dozen of those slugs that you have to put in. Thats what i have now and the directions say to put in the slug that best comes close to your old one. Well, my car had a 305 in it and now its a 350. I just put anyone in? would a cheap EGR valve cause significant loss in power? I am replacing all the O rings and a getting a new regulator body soon and I want to put in a real EGR valve this time while I am there.

The dealer.

Really, the price should not be bad from them. The AC Delco EGR valves are available from places other than the dealer too. Keeps the prices down somewhat.

Yep, dealer is best. EGR is a metering device and the "universal" ones won't be an exact match in form or function. I got mine for about $40 from the dealer about 1-2 years ago.

"Stealership"??? You get what you pay for. It kills me when people try to save a buck or two and end up w/ more problems then what they started with.

Same goes for repair work. We get a lot of work from "other" shops that couldn't figure it out or screwed it up worse. I'm actually glad people go to places like that, because in the end, we work on the cars anyhow and its always good for a laugh when we get them. Its just unfortunate for the customer that a simple repair usually ends up costing more than double what it would have if they would have come to the "stealership" in the first place. When you buy CRAP you get CRAP.

Dont get me started on quality of work from dealerships. You dont always get what you pay for, sometimes they take your money and do crap work too.

I'd contact a dealership and get an estimate

I got a new EGR valve installed for about $80, and it was the best money I ever spent at the time.. cured alot of problems I was having with my car..

Worst case is, they quote you too high... but like everyone else said, you get what you pay for most of the time..

Personally, I think it's better to spend a little more money and get it done right the first time.

Advance Auto has the GP Sorensen brand and inside the box is a Rochester Products EGR just like the dealer sells, only for less.

I just went through this same ordeal not too long ago. I checked 5 auto parts stores and they all had the universal ones. I ended up going to the dealership and getting the AC delco one. $80 OUCH!

Unfortunatly, the shop is only as good as the people they hire. Dealer techs have factory tools, factory service manuals and factory training as an advantage over aftermarket shops, but what they do with it is up to the tech. Some people take pride in there work, and others are just trying to "get by". We try our damndest to weed out the wannabe's, but I can't speak for every dealer. In general though, more stuff gets fixed correctly the first time, at the dealership (at least in Savannah anyhow).

And BTW, I posted a few posts up as 4L60Bliss, but I finally got my old account re-activated, so your still talking to the same person.

Heh, ok. Vaden is possibly the WORST dealer I have ever dealt with. I won't even go there for parts, they are that bad.

I'm searching for an EGR as well. Local dealer wants $78. Has anybody run the part number through gmpartsdirect.com to see what their price is? If somebody has the part number (88 305 "F" LB9), I'd like to check it out.

GMT,

Welcome back. It's about time the voice of reason spoke up again.

Speaking of getting old accounts reactivated, I seem to be having some trouble at sethirdgen.org. Either I pissed off the webmaster or something, but I can't log in there any more. Any idea who I can talk to about that? Geez! A guy takes off a few months to build a house and suddenly has no identity any more...

Vader,

The message board over there converted from EZBoards to UBB. Since EZBoard is controlled by *****, there was no way to retrieve member data, so the new UBB board had to start from scratch. If you ever feel inclined to post over there, just simply re-register.

Congrats on the new house. I hope it doesn't end up like the one I had built 4 years ago. Ever see the movie "The Money Pit" with Tom Hanks????
