Can someone help me reach 400rwhp?

I have recently gotten myself another job that is going to allow me to build my car. This is the planned setup:

383, 10:1, Sportsman II's, Superram intake, plenum and runners, 36# Accel injectors, Holley AFPR, Hooker 1 5/8's headers, custom y-pipe, into 3 inch hooker cat-back, 110LCA 106 intake centerline 294/300 0.540/0.562, 700r4 2,200-2,400 stall, kevlar bands and clutches, 3.73 posi.

It is going to be a roller motor, I'm buying the block this week, and the rotating assembly within a month. I do know that I'm gonna have to reprogram the computer....but I think that I'm going to take it to Cerra Racing in Illinois. What else can I do besides nitrous? Please help!

umm.. well since u want a 400rwhp 383. u prob dont have emissions in ur state.. so just get some decent forged stuff and some 220cc heads. if u do have emissions.. good luck with a 383... u may want to look into a 400 block (and do a 406, 418, 422, or 427) (see sig)

If you don't have emissions to worry about then I would use the HSR or the Mini Ram. The HSR is cheaper thatn the SR and will allow a little better breathing. Stick with some proven heads, AFR, PRO, TFS, World Products, etc. Run 10:1 or greater compression, not to much though, I think you want pump gas!! Also if you are not yet tuning your own PROMs, I would suggest you learn. You will need to do a lot of calibrating to get 'er running right. Good luck.

Well for one, I already have the SR and the World Products heads. The Sportsman II's are world heads, 200cc, 2.02 1.6, 64cc chambers. I don't have emissions to worry about, and i was planning on running about 10:1. I'm going to buy the pocket programmer, but before that i just wanted to get it closer to what it needs to be, and that's why i was planning on taking it to Cerra Racing in Illinois. I'll use the pocket programmer to fine tune it to how i want it. I'm not sure as to what cam to use with it though, cause I don't want to go TOO big, but i don't want it to be a little cam either. I want something bigger than the LPE 219 (219/219 0.560/0.560) That seems to be where i'm stuck at the most right now. Suggestions anyone?!?!

I would call or email comp cams and give them your info for a good suggestion. You could also contact LPE and see what they recommend.

I LOVE the cam that I'm running (COmp XR276HR-12). It's a great cam. I'll give you the specs if you need them. My combo isn't quite making 400hp to the ground but if I went up in cubes to say a 406, then 400 to the ground would be easy. If I had to guess I'd say I'm making 350-375 to the ground and about 385 to 400+ ft lbs. If you are staying naturally aspirated and still want those numbers on pump gas, you need to do a few things different. 1st, that 700r4 is going to rob way to much power and will not hold up for long making that kind of power. 2nd, you need to be between 10.5:1 to 10.8:1 comp. (A friend of mine has 11:1 and still uses 93 octane without detonation). 3rd, spend the money in some decent head porting and get them flow benched. With the flow bench numbers, this will allow you to pick the best cam for your combo. And finally, be prepared to do ALOT of PROM tuning, it's going to need it. I've burned 20 chips so far and I still have a little ways to go to get it where it needs to be. Every change I make, the car is running better and better.

Good luck and I'll help you where I can!

Yes I am interested in your cam specs. I thought that 10:1 would be the highest that i could go and still use pump gas. Maybe I will go a little higher, but not much.

How is the 700r4 going to rob alot of my power? With the gearing or just because it's going to break. I'm having it built very soon. I am going to use a 2200-2400 stall.

why the low stall and the low c/r? If your going to run a cam w/ 290+ durration then I would go w/ a 3000-3600 stall and not look back. The c/r also depends on you heads. Are you getting aluminum heads? They resist detonation a lot better then the iron heads do. Are you against nitrous or other power adders? This would allow it to be extremely streetable, dayly driven and still run low 11's.

Here is some idea for you.

Friend of mine ran a 400 with 8:1 compression, solid roller cam, AFR 210s with a single plane intake (gen 7 EFI). Ran 11.60s in a 3500lb car very unstable tune. Prestage.com claims this makes 443rwhp. It was tuned to run a blower, but the blower belt broke.

So I don't see 400 wouldn't be possible in your 383. I'd recommend the 210 AFRs, a roller cam (he ran a wider LSA, which you won't have to, so more advantage to you) and a good flowing intake, miniram/HSR. keep with the 10:1 compression and I don't see how you can go wrong.

There is another guy around here running a 400 with some jegster heads and a solid roller cam that recently ran a 11.20 on motor. Which again, should be more than 400rwhp seeing as his car is over 3500lbs as well.

I would really recommend calling a cam company and getting the idea from there.

Bigger Headers! 1 5/8 inch headers aren't going to cut it. Go with some 1 3/4 inch SLP headers. Great power from these

My cam specs with 1.5 rockers

.503/.510 lift
224/230 duration @ .050
276/281 duration seat to seat
112 LSA
108 ICA

700r4's in general, even if they are built well, still rob excessive power and even the built ones dont hold up.

If you have to use a 4 speed automatic, get a built 200r4 with a 3,000 stall (precision) or (yank). You'll put more power to the wheels and it will hold up ALOT better.

If you plan on staying naturally aspirated, go with a little more compression (10.5:1 - 10.8:1). You can still run 93 octane pump gas with this much compression.

The ONLY way to pick the perfect cam for your combo is to have you heads flow benched. If your heads flow peak cfm at .500 lift, then a cam with .550 lift is robbing power. Bigger isn't always better. Now, say your heads flow peak at .540 lift, then an ideal cam for these heads would not exceed .540 lift. Let's say your heads peaked 250cfm. Now you need an intake that can flow as close to that number if not more and then you would have a darn near perfectly matched heads/cam/intake combo.

Oh yea, and I would definitely go with the 1 3/4 longtube headers!

Hope this helps!
