gear drive- will it work?

can i use a gear drive on my tpi engine? Mr A.S.E. (a good friend of mine) brought it to my attention that a gear drive may play hell with the knock sensor and cause the timing to retard- is this the case?

I have heard the same thing from numerous people. The gear drive is louder and the knock sensor may pick up this noise and think its knock and yes it will retard the timing. You may be able to take a half turn or so out of the knock sensor to make it less sensitive but Im not positve it will work. gear drives sound nice but if I were you, I would record that same sound and play it all day and see how long it takes you to hate that winning noise. maybe youll like though. just cusious, why do you want a gear drive?

yes, there is 2 different kinfs of gear drives. quiet and noisey, thats why I asked him why he was choosing to go with t egear drive to begine with. I was waiting for an answer of I want to hear he noise of it.

Ru, did you have to do any machining to get the gear drive on properly?

I have a gear drive as well with no problems. Its a PJ "quiet" drive, if you could actually call it quiet.

Didnt do any machining to make it fit, but you should make sure its all ok anyway.

I did not have to have any machining done to accept the gear drive. I have actually had the engine in my car for 3 years now, 2 did not sound right.... I installed it just after my son was born, so...... Anyways, my quiet drive is actually fairly calm and is only heard when I am driving at very low speeds, any rpm and the sound is drowned out. If you want the sound, do it right and get a blower

they're not just an aesthetic deal, they sound cool to begin with, but the point to them is that you're gonna have a hard time finding more accurate cam timing, gears don't stretch out like chains and belts, but they do need to be replaced more often...

Why would mine be quiet, and others be louder? Makes no sense to me.....

Don't throw it away. A used gear drive is just about as good as a new one would be unless you ran low on oil any time. All you have to do to quiet them down is drill some small holes to let the air escape while they're turning (then cryo treat to stress relieve the new holes). Sell it to me cheap or put it on Ebay!

Heck, I had a loud gear drive on my vette and never even heard it... maybe it was the open chamber headers/side pipes.

Yeah unless it has far to many miles on it I'll buy it for a decent price. Better to get a few bucks out of it, then let the garbage man have it.. How much do you want including shipping to Welland, Ontario, Canada..postal code L3C 2R8..Please let me know either or.....

Seriously I want it..let me know.

Thanks,
Keiran
