If you're gonna pull the heads off and have them cleaned up and port-matched, then you'll want to install new valve springs and retainers, as well as check the coil bind height relative to the valve seals. With the spring upgrade you can run just about any cam you want, but one with no more than .525 lift with the 1.6 rockers would be ideal for those heads.

Hopefully I'm not speaking Greek to you here.

nope i understand everything u told me. i can get that big of a cam with stock heads? i had no idea i thought i would have clearance probs. i didnt know i could get a .525 lift cam in there with stock heads still on. i was looking at a compcam 2030 but i might go bigger now. thanks for your help. yes i do plan on having the heads rebuilt also so everything will be new there. as for the rest of the bottom end it has 117,000 mi on it so im just gonna get new rings and bearings.

You'll definately want to have your heads tapped and install screw in studs .525 lift will most likely yank the press in studs out.......

I have a cam from Edelbrock with a .442 valve lift. This will work also? They say not to use it in a TPI setup, only carborated, could you elaborate the difference betweent the cam profile between fuel injected vrs. carborated? I am having a hard time decerning between the two. Thank you!

Generally carb cams will have a tighter lobe seperation angle to make more valve over lap to draw in more air/fuel charge at higher RPM's. Generally MPI dry type manifolds don't benefit from this as much. I'd explain more, but I gotta go

Just remember the computer isn't gonna like a cam that big. The biggest cam that works nicely with a stock computer is the ZZ4 cam. Its 208/221@.050" .474/.510 112 degree seperation.

To hell with the stock computer. It doesnt cost much to get custom programming, I wouldnt hold back on extra cam for the sake of the computer. $150 piggyback PROM, problem solved.
