Comp Cams = Louder Car?

I recently had a Comp Cams Compucam and lifter set installed on my car. The car ran AMAZING after the installation....a very noticable difference in power....and also in sound. The exhaust got louder/deeper a bit from the install....which i didnt mind at all. Since then, which was last saturday, i've noticed that the car has gotten quieter.....the exhaust has quieted down a bit....is that normal? I thought when you put a more aggressive cam into your engine, it will give a deeper sound to the exhaust...but mine seems to have gotten quieter. It was louder from saturday till monday, and then i noticed it lost that deeper tone it had....anyone have any clues as to why this would happen? Thanks.

I noticed the firing order is messed up....not in the right order with the wires...long story on why we replaced the wires not one by one......but does anyone think that might have anything to do with it?

A more aggressive cam will make the car louder/deeper. The plug wires might have had something to do with it, but I kind of doubt it.

I just double-checked the wires...they seem right..I was mistaken in thinking they werent in the right firing order. After the installation of the new cam, lifters and accel injectors, and putting everything back together, tuning, etc.....the motor was washed down with cleaner and a hose. Apparently, water got in the system, b/c it ran like crap afterwards....it seemed to have cleared up alot since, but i dont have the performance back yet that I had right after the cam install and tuning......i'm guessing the water in the system is a factor in doing this but, its been almost a week already since that has happened....it takes this long to dry out?? Whats going on?? The car stalled twice the other day.

Sounds like you've got a problem with either the TPI or the ignition system... The water could have gotten into the coil/distributor somehow and it isn't firing right... You might check that.

Well, i have a new pickup coil (the round piece that has the two wires comming out of it that sits in the distirbutor and is metal) that I have to change out. My mech that did the work said this could be a major contributor to the problem. And if it isnt that, it could be the that TPS got wet and the water went on the insides of it, which would then need to be replaced. But anyway, this water in the system could cause a change in sound? Peroformance I understand....if its not that pickup coil, what do you mean by the TPI having problems...the sensors or the actual unit? Also, the motor was washed last saturday....when we completed the cam/lifter install....like I said, ran AMAZING before the water hose-down. It hasnt been the same since....does water take this long to get though the system?? Thanks for the replies though.

The new pickup coil could solve your problem. They go bad and on their way out performance decreases. The TPS could also have been permanently damaged by the water, but I kind of doubt it. Then again, it could just need replacing too. If you washed it Saturday all the water should have dried up by at least monday (even if it was humid out) so that means something was damaged by it, or something just broke. When I say the TPI might have a problem, I was reffering to the sensors.

Although I think it was INSANELY STUPID for him to wash the motor down(even though washing it is necessary b/c dirt traps heat and its never been washed down before), I still had a funny feeling about washing the motor down....and lo and behold, there it is....problems left and right. Its just aggravating. After the cam install, the car pulled BEATUFIULLY and strong to 115mph without an incident...this being on a 150k mile motor. Hopefully, the pickup coil will solve the problem. Even that this happened, this guy is a really really good mechanic and knows his stuff. And his first suggestion was the pickup coil since water most likely got into the distributor area and its never been replaced. His second thought would be the TPS, b/c its a cheap one i just bought from the store I work at....no seals in the tps sensor itself for the connectors where the harness plugs into it...the ones from NAPA have those seals...and water might have gotten into there as well. NEVER buy anything made by GP Sorensen. I just want the performance back that I had saturday....the car was never that powerful, and its tearing me apart to have it run like this after all that work. I just hope to get it back. Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it.

I know how frustrating that is.... FWIW, I've had no problem with GP Sorsen (or whatever) parts. Hopefully you can get it fixed. If he can't fix it, let us know and we'll come up with some more ideas.

Thats ok though...anyways, if after we try his way and still no progress is made, I'll get back to you and PM you also if thats ok. Thanks again

Hey, no problem, anytime. Maybe I've just gotten lucky with GP parts, I don't know, I haven't really used alot of them though... Let me know how it goes either way, email or pm me. Good luck...
