How do i remove the gas tank ?

okay this is on a 91 Z28, im going to be installing a 255 lph in tank pump, however ive never had the tank off before, ive changed the same pump on a blazer before and it should be pretty similar, but any heads up info would be great before i get into the garage tomorrow to pull it out, i dont have a muffler, so the exhaust shouldnt be a big deal, there seems to be plenty of clearance to slide the tank out. You guys have any helpful hints ?

Don't remove it, do a search at CamaroZ28.com and search on fuel pump install/ removal. Do an Access panel to remove your fuel pump. Don't drop the tank! It will be a PITA to do so - your option, though.

I don't know why people bitch so much about the tank. Yes, it is a little bit of hassle to get in/out. Yes, it is easier to cut a hole in your floor. But, it's not really that friggin' bad to do it right. And if you go cutting this and chopping that, the next time you need to do it you may have additional problems. People say that cutting a hole saves them time, well to do it right I can't see how this can be true. First you need to cut the hole in the right place and make the cut clean. Then you have to go about getting the pump out (which requires, you guessed it, more cutting) changing it and reinstalling it (which now involves a bit more "fabrication"). Now that you have the pump in, you now have to seal up the hole. That is more of a pain than one would think. In the end, it's simpler to drop the tank and do it right. Trust me, the second time you have to do it, you'll be able to in about 1/4th the time.

I didn't find it to be a big deal. Did mine in the driveway on jack stands. Getting the filler neck back through the hole was a little tough but nothing like what I was expecting from what others had said.

I know, that's what I can't figure out. It sounds like it would be worse than anything else ever, but it really isn't. I guess that when you read that you've got to drop the rear suspension (like 4 bolts) and the exhaust (like 2 more) to get it out it sounds worse than it really is. You are right, getting the filler neck back in is a little tricky, but if you take the fuel door and the "boot" out before you pull the tank, it goes so much easier.

I will have to agree with the whole "pulling the tank isn't that hard". Last week, I had my girlfriend hand me tools and I had it out in about 4 hours total (3 hours one day and 1 hour the next). I took my time and had to cut off my exhaust since it was welded everywhere, but I think a more experienced (and less lazy) tech could do it faster.
