Ignition Module?

Hi all,
I was wondering what an ignition module (7 pin) did on a GM HEI distributor (like in my 86 IROC) and how would you ever tell if it is bad? Ive been having ignition problems and was wondering if this may be the culprit! Any info could help, thank you.

The ignition module takes the A/C signal from the pickup coil, and converts it to a square wave D/C signal that the ECM can enterprit and use as tach signal.

IIRC, there is a resistance test you can do, as well as testing the reference wire for output. Should be approx. .8-1v. Don't remember the resistance values off the top of my head though.

What kind of ignition problems?

Here is a troubleshooting chart that should give you some information on it.

Hello Rudy,

They are from the GM service manual. You can order them for your car from Helm Inc. Here is the link for them.

When you get to the site, at the top of the page is a list of manufacturers. Click on GM and select chevrolet or pontiac and follow instructions from there. Yes they definitely beat out the haynes and chilton manuals.
