camshaft information

I am building an engine for my camaro, I plan on a 383 w/vortec heads , and superram upper intake, my question is what camshaft should I get, I was thinking about an Lt4 hotcam, but I can order a kit that comes with a cam, but I just need to know what the specifications of a camshaft would be that was streetable and still made good horsepower. Thanks

Sorry Guys...The car is an 85 Z28 w/700R4 and 3.23 gears. I want the car to be very streetable, I am going to use it as a dailly driver. I am going with vortec heads and supperam intake. A little lope at idle might not be too bad, but I just want this to be an all around engine, I want lots of power, but not at the sacrifice of drivability.

Are you able to buy a different torque coverter or stall? I believe that the 85's came with flat tappet cams. If you are willing to do a retro-fit roller than the LPE 219/219 is a VERY good cam. It is being clearenced out on the website for $250. It has peak hp around 4,500 RPM and is very streetable with a hint of lope. You should have mass air flow right now. Which might be OK for that cam. If you really want to perfect it though you will need PROM tuning. Flat Tappet you could use a 218/224 int. duration @.050.

Doesn't the LPE 74219 cam peak around 5,500? 219/219 duration @ .050" is pretty close to the LT4 Hot-Cam.

I'm just curious because I thought it peaked a little higher than that.

I've got the 211/219 LPE cam and everything I've read says I'll hit my HP peak around 5,000rpm.

I would recommend using the LPE 74211 cam. The Vortec heads do not flow at or above 75% intake/exhaust and work better with a dual pattern cam. The heads WILL need to be modified for better springs.

Somebody had posted a desk top dyno of a LPE 219/219 cam on a TPI, it peaked at 4,500 RPM. Somebody also posted an actual dyno slip of a peak at just after 4,500 rpm. Of course Compression, rocker size, cam adjustment, Heads and what other things have been done play a HUGE roll. I have seen many actual dyno slips for a stealth ramd or TPI LT-4 hot cam peaking as low as 4,800 rpm and as high as 6,200 RPM. If you have a peak at 5,000 rpm that is possible. What CID do you have? He will have a 383. Vortecs might not be the best bet for a single pattern cam, but with good exhaust and some head work it will be sufficient.

Sounds great. What heads do you have. A set of edelbrocks or AFRs would go great with that.
