Throttle Sticking

I am having a problem with my throttle sticking on the GTA. When the car is off there is no problem at all. It goes right back to where it should be. Throttle and cruise cables aren't the problem because I checked it with them disconnected. When the car is running it seems to stick around 1500 to 2800 RMPs. I can push it down iwth my finger and it will be fine but if I give it throttle and let it go it will stick again. There is also a little bit of play on the shaft. I can move it side to side a little bit, is this normal? It has been a little sticky for a while now but it just receintly got a lot worse. Any ideas?

I cleaned it out with throttlebody cleaner last night and it drove fine, drove it this morning and it is back to sticking Should I have done anything after I was done cleaning it?

The throttle body on my corvette has the same problem. I've found that lubing it with motor oil lasts longer than anything else I've tried (2-3k miles). Eventually I'll need a new throttle body though.

I just put on a Holley 52mm throttle body on my SuperRam and had the throttle sticking during testing before I ever turned it on. My problem was the engagement lever on the TPS was dragging on the side of the throttle body. I had to grind a little off the TPS's lever to get it to clear and operate freely. Maybe that's your problem too, or some crud has built up between the TPS lever and the TB. Wouldn't hurt to check it out and clean it up a bit then oil as said above.

Hope this helps, be sure to let us know the final solution.

Have a Great Day!!!

It's well known (well, apparently not to you until you found out the hard way ) that the holley throttle body requires you to file the TPS. No such problem should exist with the stock throttle body, nor am I aware of that issue with the BBK/Edelbrock. In the case of my Vette, I've got a TPIS, which is a bored stock unit, so that's not an issue either. It seems to be a result of wear in the hole that the shaft rides on. Boring it and installing bearings should fix it, and I do believe there's a guy that provides that service (along with boring and larger butterflies) through ebay for around $250.

Yeah, my brand new 58mm BBK was fine, but the new Holley 52mm had to have it ground down. I know about that "known problem" now!!!!

(Wasn't too tough --- even an old Phat Phart like me figured it out and fixed it fairly quickly!!!!)

Thanks, and Have a Great Day!!!

I think I'm having the same problem. Mine gets stuck at 1500-2200 or so. Never higher than that... Yet!

It used to happen once in a while. This weekend I cleaned out my throttlebody with carb cleaner and now it seems worse. I figured I must have blown out some lubricant.

Last PM, I used some "miracle" WD-40 (just for a test) on both sides of the throttlebody shaft and it didn't get any better or if it did not much.

I thought it might be getting stuck on the throttle cable, so I pulled it forward. Well, the throttle closed slightly further but not all the way. It seems that while its running it just doesn't have enough uumph to close up. Something must be resisting the plates from closing. That with the vacuum of running is just enough.

Like yours mine also seems fine when the car is off.

Let me know what you do!

I'm going to try to diagnose it a little further.

JA_Formula_89 ---

Is the TPS lever dragging on the TB? What brand TB is it?

Update.....

Now I sprayed the TB on the inside. On both sides of the butterflies where the shaft goes through. That seems to have improved it and now I can't make the throttle body stick even when its running. I was on my lunch, so I didn't get to do a LOT of testing yet. The ride home tonight will be the test I guess!

Maybe I cleaned out some lube with Carb Cleaner? Or maybe all that gum that came out went into the shaft holes???

Vernw:
I don't believe it is. I tried checking for this last PM after reading about problems with Holley TPS's. I was able to control the TPS independent of the throttle body and didn't see it bind, nor did I see how it would bind if it did. I'll try again though if it starts sticking again.

I believe both my TPI Throttle Body and TPS are both stock. I had the car since 18K so, I'm pretty sure.

I don't consider the solution nailed down quite yet.

Those of you with sticking throttle plates, lube the outside of the TB(where the shaft turns) with tranny oil or some type of real oil, NOT wd-40 which mostly drives away moisture. WD is fine to clean it before you oil it.
Take the boot off the front and lube to the left and right of BOTH butterfly valves.
Put boot back on and enjoy your new non sticking throttle.

Yes, I agree WD40 is not really lube! Its good for doing my test though.

My standard tranny takes Automatic Transmission fluid. I think your saying I should put some Gear Lube or something heavy like that in there?

Yep, even some of that household 1h oil. Something that lubes properly. I use auto tranny fluid cause that's what i got in the squirter thingy and that works awesome.
