Car dies going into gear
whenever i put the car from park to reverse it dies, or idles fine, and when i let go of the brake it dies. what the hell is going on here? i just got my car back from the shop for suspension and now on the way home this happens. it also does it in drive too but not as bad. i checked all vaccum lines, my EGR valve and sensor is new, timing is good. the brake booster line is good. im out of things to check. also im getting water coming out of my tail pipes, what causes that? thanks all!

Check your fuel pressure if you have a gauge, pump could be weak, or the fuel filter is clogged, when you put it in gear, the demand for fuel goes up a bit, and maybe the pump can't keep up or the filter won't let the fuel through. If it stays running how does it feel? Kind of flat, or does it have decent power? If you have power and it feels good, it's probably not the pump/filter.
IAC? I'd take the Throttle body off and clean it out, check out the passages for the IAC and clean that too, replace it if in doubt.

That USED to happen to me...till a really good mechanic found out what it was....the neutral saftey switch in the center console by/under the shifter. Fixed the problem, havent had it since.

its using a bit too much gas and has no power, and now i see now water out the tail pipes, its not a lot, just drips. and the car jerks when im cruising, and will die a lot no matter what now. and the RPMS fulx A LOT when im not on the gas gettin ready to come to a stop. dunno what to do now.

this only happens in closed loop tho. when i first start it up for the first 10 minutes or so it runs and drives PERFECT. but when the rpms set down to about 500 or 450 in park when it enters closed loop, thats when it starts to be like that. and it just started doing this like i said when i got it back from the shop. i didnt really trust the shop in the first place but its all i could afford. im thinking they might have messed with something so i would have to bring my car back. i know about 2 other places in my town that have down this to my moms van... every time we got that thing back, something else was wrong, and after we switched mechanics no more problems. i dont know whats going on.

let's see. you have an 87 car? intermittent stalling when putting the car into gear. I had a similar situation that turned out to be a badly corroded pickup coil in the distributor/crappy module. I changed the module as a tune up, trying to figure out what was going on, but it was acutally the bad connection, and i screwed up by putting a bad module back in, which was brand new!
underneath the cap and rotor, there is a coil of wire with a metal shield around it, kinda like a squared up donut, that wraps around the distributor shaft. off of that piece, there is a white and green wire, which go to a connector. my connector was all melted and green, so i cleaned it up, and put it back together with the old GM module, and then it worked.
i found out later testing the new junk module, that the pulses going out of it were all unstable around 400 rpm, right where the car drops when you put it into gear, and it was causing the engine to stumble enough to stall.
there was a service bulletin about defective pickup coils for 87, it could be a latent problem.
if you replace the module, use only a GM one.
good luck
