Crate Engine

I am looking to buy a new crate motor and was wonder which ones will support my tpi system. I was thinking of a 350 for around 2000.

320hp for $2295
Aluminum headed TPI motor. For $2559 the will put a good cam and either TrickFlow heads or Edelbrock and make about 400hp (that's what the guesstimate would be, could be little higher or little lower).

You won't gain any HP this route, but Japer sells a stock replacement engine (L98) for our cars for about that price and all of their rebuilds come with a 3yr/70k mile warranty. I bought one about three years ago and it was 2500 shipped and that was 350 more than I had to spend because I wanted to keep my old engine and didn't get my core charge back. Not too shaby for a rebuilt engine with a better warranty than GM put on it when it was brand newif you ask me. No problems with it to date.

I just noticed you are currently runing a 305. FYI, you have to change more than just the "engine" to step up to a 350. You probobly know that though, but if you don't than do a search about this. It's been talked about on this board more times than I care to count.

The blocks are the same, and so is the intake, for the same years of course. You will need a 350 chip and a 350 knock sensor.

Nothing major, just the cheaper bolt on's. I decided a while back that I wanted to quit nickle and dimeing it to more HP, so I put it in storage and am waiting to get a decent sized budget. It's really tuff having a car you like so much and not getting to tincker with it!!

I am pretty sure it won't, it sounds as if the heads are the old bolt pattern.

If I am not mistaken, the 'old bolt pattern' was used through '86. His is a '86 which if I am right would have the old pattern. Can anyone verify this??

Re: Re: Crate Engine

The 320hp_alum_head one has a 2 piece seal - are there any 4 bolt main with 1 piece seal that a stock TPI off of an 88 305 TPI bolt onto?

the seal refers to the rear main seal, sbc heads are pretty much interchangable before the sbc gen 2 (lt1). You can elongate the holes in the 88 305 tpi base to use with heads that are considered pre 87 which include the L98 alum heads.

Goautocenter has a motor set up for TPI, its suppose to produce 300 hp for about $1900. A couple folkes have got this engine and seem to be happy.

* note with stock exhaust....ect. it dropes to about 260bhp. However, thats 30 more hp then my car came stock

I think its worth a look and they will answer your questions.

They are correct, they used to have one. I'm sure that if you told them to use the new pattern heads that they will. I would call, they are the cheapest around for a basically complete engine.

will the cam thats in the 320hp motor work with the 1986 tpi maf setup (89 350 prom will be used) ?. the cam specs are 214 224 .442 .465 112

I am seriously considering this setup but if it wont work ill have them change the cam to a size smaller.

That cam is for TPI systems. Not only that, since the MAF systems measure the passing air and not the vaccum, it's easier to run the TPI with a little bit larger cam than with the SD... not that it can't be done.

Are you looking to use the stock heads or the aftermarket heads? If you look at the bottom of the TPI engine page, you will see the prices and cost for the aftermarket parts.
